Need some quick help. Stranded

Stopped in a parking lot and couldnt get started again. I suspected fuel because I wasn't seeing any spraying into the carb with each pump.

I pulled the fuel line that exits the fuel pump and attempted to start it to see if fuel would come out. No fuel came out of the line after about 10 seconds of turning the key?

fuel pump bad? Something else?

Clogged line?,,Any possibility running it off a gas can?

You'll need some 3/8 hose, hose clamps, and some way of plugging the line from the tank lest it result in a gravity fed fuel spill...

Precisely why I run a fuel tank switch even though I only have one tank.

I am correct in thinking that pulling the fuel line from the carb and turning the key should result in fuel spill if the fuel pump is good

Cranking with the fuel line disconnect ted from the carb should result in fuel squirting across the parking lot.

No squirting and ya got a bad pump, a.clogged line or a clogged screw on filter cartridge.

A new pump would solve the cartridge screw possibility also?

There are dozens of possibilities other than what has been listed above. Is there fuel in the tank? Has the pickup tube broken inside the tank? Is there a cracked fuel line that is allowing the fuel pump to suck air instead of fuel? Has the arm broken off of the fuel pump? Has the cam gear eccentric broken or fallen off? Is the timing chain broken?

Check the cheap and easy things first. Pull the screw-on filter under the pump to confirm that that is not the problem. Be careful so you don't end up mangling the cap anyway so you will need a new fuel pump.

So I have ruled out a lot of these.

1. Fuel in the tank - 17+ gallons, had just filled her up.
2. checked fuel lines, look to be in good order. pulled the rubber section under the driver door and it flows with no issue.
3. Pulled fuel pump off, arm is not broken.
4. Don't know how to know if the cam gear eccentric has broken. I'm assuming this is a part that moves the pump handle? Seems like a super unusual thing to have break? wouldn't there be a bunk of clunking around while the motor is running? I stuck my finger up in there, but i have no idea what I was feeling for so not sure on this one.

motor will run on starting fluid with no issues or unusual noises, misfires, etc.

Let me say this, When i pulled the fuel pump off the truck and pushed on the lever it felt like it was pumping air out (not sure if pumping or pushing) of both holes... didn't seem broken. any way to test this? fuel can and 2 hoses? for $30 its almost not worth fooling with it.

where to gurus... replace the pump and absolutely rule that out?

Maybe you can look into the timing cover with the fuel pump off to see if the eccentric is there. A small mirror would be handy. There should be a shiny, smooth round cam that the fuel pump lever is actuated by. If all that is intact and your certain that all the rubber fuel lines are intact then yeah it might be time to try a new fuel pump.

Best way to test the pump is rig up a gas can like was suggested above for emergency movement of the truck. Do it for trouble shooting too. If the pump is OK, then there's a blockage farther back to or in the tank.

Good luck!

You might as well replace the pump anyway now since you pulled it without checking the filter canister. You will have to get a gasket any who.

If the filter in that canister is on the suction side then you might want to make sure the gasket is in it properly and not sucking air. It will suck air before it leaks fuel.

Since I can't leave it in the lot where it is forever I have to formulate a solution.

1st I'm going to buy several feet of 3/8 line and skip the tank by running it strait in a gas can. This will tell me immediately if its pump or lines.

If it fires I'll just bypass the metal line and go straight to the connector coming under the cab with the rubber hose I bought.

If if that doesn't work I'll install the new pump. And go from there.

Put a gas can on the hood and gravity feed it. A boat gas can with the bulb to prime the carburetor is the best. One night I went 60 miles like that.
