I have a 1984 ford f150 long box dual tanks 4x4 4.9l I have had it for a little bit fill both tanks when I got and the gauge worked for both. Last night I was driving home and was getting low on the front tank so I switch it to the rear but noticed my gauge went to empty...made it home parked it. When I got up this morning started up and got into the warm up cycle I went in and when I came back out it wasn't running and wouldn't fire. I switched it back and got it to fire after alot of cranking and some starting fluid. Is there something wrong with the valve or is it in the switch and what's the best way to test it?
The first clue was when you switched the tank to rear and the gauge went to "E"...Then, when you switched to the front tank, it was starved having to prompt with starting fluid, it started. It's not a switch issue, but a tank TX (transfer) valve issue. Are you confident on the tank vents?
Honestly I haven't inspected them I am thinking I need to pull it over the pit a tr work and take a look at it. I worked with 87 to 91 setups not the carbed ones
1986 uses different valves as there are two types, one has 3 ports, t'other has 6 ports
So mine is the 3 port one and none of the parts houses can pull up the part they all pull up the 6 port anyone have a part number for it? Also I think I wanna check wiring on this. Do I look for a powered wire going to it? Is that main wire powered?
Oreily's has it listed as a universal part. it is how ever a BWD part so its not OE Borg-Warner has a life time warranty on there parts. might be able to get my shops First Call rep to replace it. Part# FSV1
Well changed it today and it's still doing the same thing. I know there's fuel in the tank. So I'm at a loss anyone have any ideas? Is there a fuse for it?
OK so checked fuse it's good. Got a test light and check for power at the selector valve got power when on the front tank no power when I switch to the rear tank...
My old 80 started having problems, and I found if I took the tank selector switch in the dash and moved it up and down rapidly the fuel gauge and everything else would start working. It did this several times over a period of months, so I got rid of the rear tank and just plumbed it up straight to the front tank. I then bypassed the switch in the dash. I never needed both tanks anyway.
