I noticed I was not shifting into 4x4 electronically and replaced the blown fuse in the engine compartment. Now the 4x4 light goes on, but I don't think it is engaging the system... How can I tell, or troubleshooting ideas?
The back end breaks free very easily, but there seems to be a little pull in the front. Is it possible to have unequal power to the wheels?
You probably have a vacuum leak somewhere. It could be a bad line, an axle seal or the vacuum pump. Try manually locking hubs and turning axle shafts. Then try with hubs on auto. You may need to roll the vehicle down the road or neighborhood to get a good diagnosis. If it hubs engage 4x4 on manual but not auto, then you have a leak or a bad vacuum pump.
You can check in the driveway by jacking the front end off the ground and rotating the wheels. Be sure to chock the wheels first. Try all modes of 4x4.. hubs locked, unlocked, 4x4 engaged, disengaged. It can be a tedious process.
With the wheels on the ground, you should be able to turn the front axles by hand with it in 2wd and the hubs not locked.
If you can turn them by hand, engage the 4wd inside and try to turn them again. If you can't, then the front wheels are engaged. If you can, then manually lock the hubs and try turning them again - if you can't , then the hubs aren't locking automatically. You csn still use it though just by locking the hubs manually.
I'm having the same issue, of course it had to happen on the first bad snow of the year, so the roads are not plowed and couldn't make it to work.
I know they are not engaging automatically, front tires don't spin under power at all.
This is my first 4x4 with an automatic switch, how do I lock the hubs manually? I'm used to seeing the big red locks in the center of the wheels...
I have a 2004 F350.
Thanks for any help
In the center of each front wheel is a small dial. If you get real close to it, you see "auto" with a directional arrow and "manual" with an opposite directional arrow. Just turn the hub on both front wheels to "manual".
Thanks
as soon as I can dig the drift away, Ill go look. I am assuming they are behind the center cap then, I don't have the stock wheels, truck was lifted when i bought it and have different wheels.
Apologize for my ignorance.
