Where is the engine serial # located?

Hi I'm a new member to this site and I recently got a 1955 F-100. My problem is that the truck has been sitting for almost 20 years and the pink slip is no where to be found. What I need help on is where I can find the engine serial number on it? The engine is the original inline six. The other thing I was wondering about is how the vehicle identification plaque in the glove box was originaly mounted because mine looks like it was riped off then reattatched to the glove box door with screws. Any help would be greatly apreciated.

Hey, a question I can help with.
If the engine is original the VIN number will give you the info you need. There are VIN decoders out on the internet somewhere.
My *** truck catalog has a handy one though.

The 55 6 Cylinder was a 223

Your vin should be F10D5 followed by a letter representing the assembly plant then a 5 digit production sequence.

There is also a casting number on the block somewhere. (I have a Y-block so it is probably in a different location than mine.)
Others may be able to give you some more info there.

If you post the VIN we could verify this.

Good luck with your truck. Fun stuff. All you need is money and time

Harrier is right, there really isn't an engine serial number on these trucks. The only thing you'll find on the engine is a cast-in number identifying the exact block type, and maybe the year or years it was manufactured. In some cases, you can figure out where the casting was made from the location of the numbers or the numbers themselves.

As you indicated, the VIN on your truck should be on the rating plate in the glove box. There is also additional information about HP, torque, transmission, etc. on the rating plate.

If you are concerned about whether the rating plate is original, the VIN is also stamped on the top of the frame rail between the front axle and the front of the cab. On my 56, it was on the passenger side rail. Other folks have found it on the driver side rail. If you look very carefully and wipe off as much crud as possible, you should be able to read the stamped VIN on the rail. That would allow you to verify that the frame VIN matches the VIN on the rating plate.

Thanks for the help guys! I'm just trying to get all the DMV papers filled out before I tow the thing up to the CHP office and get the #'s verified so i can get the title for the truck. Now I'm pretty sure its the same because engine and the color match up with the rating plate.
