Hi all. I am new to this site and am hoping to find some help and help others. A little bit about me, I used to own a 1960 F-100, had a 292, three on the tree. I dropped in a 351W with a C-4 out of a 1976 Montego. Had the truck for 4 years before finances forced me to sell it (needless to say, I'm still kickin myself for it). I'm now in the process of buying a 1958 F-100, also with a 292 3-on-the-tree that's been sitting for 2 years. Still has the original engine/tranny (tranny/clutch rebuilt just before it was parked). I still have some classic parts resources from when I had my previous truck, but I have no clue how to find out info such as the original equipment for this truck (tires, radio, etc.) Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
First off welcome to FTE! I get parts from alot of places. Since I'm going completely original, I try and get N.O.S from ebay. I'd try first motorhaven(supports the site) just click the PARTS SHOP up in the right hand corner. Then I like dennis-carpenter.com(highlite that and paste into address bar to work) joblotautomtive.com, there's alot of places that carry parts. I personally like carpenter because of the high quality parts they make. Post some pics up and hang out around the site. We joke alot so never take any of us seriously. Look foward to hearing more from you. -4speed
Thanks 4speed. I don't have possession of the truck yet, but I'll definitely post pics as soon as I get it. Another question, is there a site that can tell me how to decode the VIN to find the original specs (color, tire size, etc.)? Thanks again.
Try surfing the net and getting parts from junkyards in the south. Parts, raw metal components are usually in good enough shape for a rebuild or ready to be cleaned and used.
I've searched the net and I found one company that has all the parts you need. It's called johnsf100.com this is the site where I get all my parts for my 54' pickup.
Thank you all for your help. I'm in the military stationed in Alaska, so I won't be looking for any body parts or heavy items until I get back to civilization. You wouldn't believe the amount some places charge for shipping up here because they can't UPS Ground it.
4speed, I'll have to get back with you on the VIN as I won't be seeing the guy I'm buying it from for a couple more weeks.
Gilbert, that website is awesome. It's the only place I've EVER seen a speedo cable for these trucks. My first assignment was Randolph (1995-1999), and I loved it (lived in New Berlin by Seguin). I had my 60 f-100 while I was there. I miss that truck (aka "The Green Beast").
Hello again, all. Sorry bout the delay in getting the VIN. It is : F1OL8R25298. Any help is greatly appreciated. I should have the truck by the end of September, but I won't be driving it until the spring (I refuse to drive a classic in the Alaska winter, and I need to give it a good once over mechanics/safety-wise). I'll also post pics as soon as I have it in my possession. Thanks again.
F10...............Conventional cab, 1/2 ton
L...................272 V-8, Which means your truck was built in the earlier half of the production year (they switched to the 292 V-8 around mid-production year of 1958).
8...................1958 model year
R...................San Jose assembly plant
25298...........Sequential production number
The remaining codes on your rating data plate (inside the glovebox door) will tell you the truck's original color, gear ratio, assembly date, etc.
Thanks Kenny. One other question, what was the difference between the Conventional cab and the Custom cab? My 60 was a Custom cab, but the interior of the '58 I'm getting looks very similar.
The F-series trucks are all "Conventional cabs" (hood up front), as opposed to say the C-series which are COE (Cab over engine), or the P-series which stands for "Parcel delivery".
Then you have the "standard cab" Vs. "Custom cab"
The standard cab was basically the "plain Jane" model. The Custom cab was just a package of fancier stuff.
The 1958 custom cab package included......
Bright metal grille bar and headlight assembly
Bright metal parking lamp rims
Bright metal windshield reveal molding
"Custom Cab" emblem on each door
Door lock on both doors
Two-tone brown and white nylon-saran seat upholstry in a hounds tooth pattern (standard cab had brown and tan woven plastic material)
Thermoacoustic headliner, and preforrated hardboard door panels
Cigar Lighter
Two sun visors
sound deadener package
