I recently came to the conclusion I want a manual trans truck. I searched junk yards and CL and found only a small selection of things I would need to swap my c6 to a 4 speed.
So, I listed my truck for sale on eBay this weekend. Here we are today and the truck will already bring more than I paid for it, and I still have until Sunday at 10pm for bidding. Not to mention the real bidding starts near the end of the auction.
I also got an email from a CL ad I replied to weeks ago saying he has a T-19 with everything needed for the swap for $600.
My questions:
Should I take my truck off ebay and do the swap or wait and buy another?
Is $600 a good price for everything? From his email: I have a good t-19 as well as all the parts needed for the conv.
Need trans, bell housing, flywheel, driveline, pedal assembly, z-bar with brackets, clutch set, fork, and clutch linkages.
Package deal on all parts is $600.
Price seems reasonable. Trans alone seems to be around $600.00 on ebay. The real question is if you sell your truck for more will you be able to find something within you budget to replace it?
Eventually, I'm sure I will. There are a couple listed now that look ok but I should wait until a better deal comes along. I don't want to rush into anything. Good to know about the trans price. Thanks for the input!
IMHO, buy one factory built with a 4 speed. It will already have EVERY thing for that 4 speed. From the speedo drive gear (rear axle and tire size matching) to the clutch pedal pad. Which, BTW, are still available from Ford. Part number B7A2457A. And pilot bushing to rear u-joint. I would rather spend the time making the truck more safe and reliable than all that adapting. They say "A Man's Got To Choose His Battles". Now you know which battle I would choose. My $.02.
Some damn fine advice. My budget is slowly increasing as we speak. I'll sell this one and keep on the hunt for a factory manual.
Are there any real advantages to the T19? Would first gear actually be usable in day to day driving or is that completely dependent on the gearing?
Features
The T18 is a top loaded, top shifting truck style transmission. The Ford and some Jeep T18s enjoys a very low compound gear at 6.32:1 and as such it is a popular choice for those wanting a very low crawling gear. T19 versions offer a 6.32:1 (IH), 5:1 or 4:1 (Ford) low gear.
The T18 is synchronized in the second through fourth gears. All gears are helically cut except first and reverse, which are spur gears. T19s are fully synchronized in all gears and feature all helically cut gears.
Rowing that 4 speed shift lever back/forth in heavy traffic becomes tiresome PDQ!
In 1968, I bought a new F250 Ranger 2WD 390/T-18. Within a week, I regretted buying a 4 speed. Shifting that 4 speed on the dreaded 405 freeway was a PITA.
In 1971 while parked in front of my gal pal's house, it was t-boned by a drunk driver. I didn't shed a tear, bought a new 1971 F100 Ranger XLT 390/C6. So, personally, I'd keep the C6.
I drove manuals for the last 13 years and been without one for 3 and it's all I want. Is there a better vehicle to get than a 40+ year old truck with one? I wouldn't doubt it, but it's what I want for now. Won't be a daily driver, and who knows, maybe it will make me appreciate my automatics.
Thanks for the input though. I'm selling mine and will be on the hunt for my second bump. Too bad there are good deals on dents near me, but who wants one of those
