Generally tailgates were stolen because they didn't lock or you had to go to the tailgate and lock it with the key and people wouldn't do that. They are super simple to take off, takes a couple minutes once you know how. To replace the tailgate it is $4700 (I believe that is what ford quoted a member on here who wanted to replace his with a tailgate step version). So to dishonest people a couple minutes for a big score. Now that tailgates are locking with the truck doors, it makes it a lot harder to steal, but still not impossible just like your truck can be stolen when the doors are locked. They also have a little tailgate lock thing that you can purchase that goes above the passenger side of the tailgate covering the hinge with some metal and star bolts to hold it on so they can't slip the tailgate off without first removing that. My dealer installed this lock piece on all of the on lot trucks. They said they had someone take like 40 tailgates one year and after that for the $10-20 for the parts it keeps them sleeping at night.

Thanks for the explanation.
So there IS another means to secure the gate....the add-on bolt.

I'll look into that.

A lot of people just use a hose clamp as a means of securing it instead of using the lock, even though you can use a screw driver easy enough to get it off, just another way to keep people from trying. Also you can switch out the screw to a different type.

I had one of these on my 2011. I have no idea if it ever deterred a theft but that's a good thing.

Reviews said several tailgates were stolen with the cheap McGard lock. I'd like to see that other bolt on the dealer used if anyone finds it.
