I have a problem on my F250 4x4. The 4x4 doesn't engage from inside. I tested for vacuum on the pipe that leads out of the solenoid. There seems to be no vacuum building on the outlet line. This is the line that go to the wheels. Is my solenoid stuffed. the pump works well and vents do not default to defrost.
thank you. just to clarify something, there is a white plastic pipe thingy that comes out of the vacuum pump. there is nothing plugged into it. it looks like some sort of overflow. Must air/ vacuum be released/ come out of this pipe when the vac pump is running? Mine seems to be releasing a bit of air as I can feel this when I place my finger over it. Is it ok?

Sorry, but I'm not at all familiar with the diesel vacuum pump setup, my EX has the 10 cylinder vacuum pump with spark plugs. Hopefully one of the PSD guys will drop in here to help.
Amaford,
Here's a couple of links that might help you. Also - a good idea I got from this site. If you have to replace any vacuum lines rather than use hose go to your local hardware store and pick up some of the black 1/4" drip tubing. Its UV resistand and won't dry up & crack.

Is your problem with the hubs not locking or your transfer case is not shifting into 4x4?
The vacuum pulse that comes from the hub lock solenoid is so low that it doesn't even feel like it has vacuum when you pull the hose off.
You need a mightyvac vacuum test pump to check your system out. Many Autozone stores have this available in their loaner tool program. There are 2 hoses coming off the solenoid. Put the mightvac on and check for vacuum. There will only be vacuum (8.9"+) for 2 minutes after you select 4x4 and then the vacuum bleeds off. Then when you turn switch back to 2x4 there will be 5.9"-7.1" hg for only 20 seconds before bleeding off. Here is a link to thread. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...99-2010-a.html
Now, this does not have anything to do with your transfer case shifting. If your 4x4 light is not coming on in the dash, then you have a different issue.
First confirm you are getting constant vacuum supply to the solenoid from the other line. Since your pump never turns off, then you have a vacuum leak somewhere. Try and listen for air leaks and take a look for broken lines. Don't worry about any vacuum lines after the PVH solenoid because a leak in those lines will not keep your pump running all the time. Then you can plug the vacuum supply line before the solenoid and wait to see if your pump shuts off. If it does, then you have a leaking PVH solenoid. If you can't find any other vacuum leak, the vacuum reservoir tank can be cracked and leaking.

If the solenoid is getting the proper electrical signals and there is no vacuum to the hub lines, then most likely your solenoid is bad. But remember that there will only be vacuum for the brief periods that I posted earlier and not all the time.
ok great. I pulled out the pipe that goes into PVH solenoid and plugged it. The vac pump stopped. So, is it the PVH solenoid that's leaking? Where does it leak from? Can it be fixed?

Yes, that is proof that the solenoid is leaking. The solenoid is not a simple on-off function. It has 4 different operations; High VAC, Low Vac, No Vac, and Vac bleed off, so it is hard to say where yours is leaking, but I suspect it is an internal seal or the valve is stuck between positions. I have not taken one apart, but I don't think it is repairable. You have the option of an aftermarket Dorman or an OEM solenoid. Read my thread I provided a link to earlier before you decide which one to buy.
The 4x4 light on the dash tells you if the transfer case has shifted into position. The computer has no way of knowing whether or not the hubs locked or unlocked.
