Bouncing tach?

'86 F-350, my tach has been getting less accurate and reliable the past few weeks. It now bounces constantly up/down and ready low. Used to be it would bounce a bit when cold but be steady and accurate at higher RPM or any RPM once up to temp. This leads me to believe the sensor is going bad. I tried removing it and cleaning the bit of oily shmoo off the tip and using contact cleaner on the plug but no change.

This sensor is Motorcraft and only a year or two old. I've read about these being a high failure rate item previously. Is the sensor likely my problem? Is there a way to make them last longer? I just ordered a Wells SU13350 sensor, thinking maybe the Wells version may be a little more robust. Any other alternatives? Barking up the wrong tree? I guess I'll find out in a couple days, but it's disappointing the tach goes **** up right after my ZF5 swap so I can't fully appreciate the RPM drop. Didn't mess with any wiring during the swap except to make a jumper for the neutral safety switch.

Could be a defective item as well, happens to all brands. I have a new (4 year old) motorcraft sensor on my 6.9 and it still reads perfect. Reads while starter is turning over.

In the FAQ there's a couple of low-cost ways of making your own sensor.

New Wells pickup installed and the tach reads accurate and steady. If this is a once a year replacement item I may start improvising, thanks for pointing out the low cost alternatives in the FAQ thread. Seems like such a simple part to cost so much, it is what it is if it's once every decade or few but I'm not spending $60 every year on a tach sensor.
