My dealer’s parts guy quoted me $450 + sales tax for the KR applique. Buying it there allows me the option to refuse delivery if it arrives damaged. Adding this applique may be one of those situations where the correct path is not realized until all the parts are in hand. But before I order, please entertain a few questions of mine. After studying this photo of an OEM pre-punched tailgate, I’m left wondering if separating the inner and outer layers of the applique is really necessary.
In lieu of separating, couldn’t the high spots (see red boxes below) of the inner layer be trimmed/removed to allow clearance? Did the areas in the green boxes need trimming? It seems logical to me that if this applique comes installed on the Ultimate-option trucks with both layers, shouldn’t both layers remain intact when adding the applique to a non-Ultimate truck? I would leave the central alignment pin intact to use with the hole behind the large blue oval. Of course that means I’d have to remove the large center blue oval.
And that brings me to my last questions for Swampyankee. Were the large blue oval and KR badge emblems removed prior to double-back taping the applique in place? Or was only one removed?
I may have answered my own question in regards to leaving both layers intact. The non-punched tailgate (like mine) on the left has a gradual recess angle whereas the pre-punched tailgate appears to have a distinct step in the same area.
Good evening,
the blue oval and KR emblems were left in place...
i do not not see how you could leave the inner (black) piece in tact and complete this mod on a “non-chrome packaged” truck
Thanks for the emblem info. As I mentioned in post #17 above, I am now seeing why the two layers cannot be left intact, Thanks again!
Love this mod and the post, thank you! I'm going to add this to my '17 KR as well but haven't found the $450 price some of you have posted so if you have any suggestions please reply.
cficare, it appears we have the same color KR and I'm curious if you had the Super Duty on the hood and tailgate painted or if you used another product? It looks like it matches the lower color on your truck which is the same color I have. What did you use and where did you find it? Thanks!
My KR is Oxford White ... didn't want the Platinum White after having it on my wife's 2013 Explorer (paint touch-up can be a real pain). I also opted for Oxford White because it's much easier to find matching wrap material which I used on my grille bars. Added a 3M clear protective wrap to the front bumper and WeatherTech headlight protective stick-on covers. The Super Duty Lettering? They were made to match the 2017 Caribou color and are available at https://www.tufskinz.com/ and were very easy to install.
Regarding price, the parts manager at my dealer agreed to getting me that applique panel for $450 + sales tax. Buying it is not the problem. I'm still on the proverbial fence because I'm concerned over the amount of available surface to provide adequate adhesion. If the total contact surface area is small, will the double-back tape withstand years of service? Also noticed in a photo posted above that a user did not appear to include any channels or breaks in the tape for moisture to escape/drain. I'd really hate myself if that $450 piece of plastic flew off somewhere along the road.
I never did this mod on my 2017 KR ... I plain ol' chickened out. But since I recently ordered a 2022 KR, I'm now wondering if anyone has attempted this on a 2020+ Super Duty yet.
i have attempted this on my 2020 kr and it did not work out well. the chrome piece was coming up at the ends and this tape is a pain to get off the tailgate so I am waiting to d round 2.

Thanks for speaking up. Did you have to separate inner and outer layers of the applique or is it now just a single piece on the newer Super Duty trucks? If you have photos, I'd enjoy seeing them.
So that part number is about $700 now, and it says it only fits up yo 2020. are '21-'22 different ?
If you use only the best 3M tape and lots of it I don't see why it shouldn't work. half the stuff is held on with tape these days.
Why you can't get this without the chrome package I don't like is a mystery. I want to do it this thread is the most encouraging thing on it I've seen so far.
Yes the back can still be removed just as in the older style. I tried doing it with the back still on, it seemed to fit better. Had to remove all the clips, and cut off all the plastic nipple of course. It fit well and I used the exact same 3m tape, prepped the surfaces etc. it just did stick well at the end of the piece and started to lift. the tape definitely stuck extremely well to the tailgate and was hell to remove from the truck side, it just didn't stick well to the back of the applique. I will regroup and give it another shot at some point, just have other irons in the fire right now. I do like the way it looks on the truck, I did not take any pics. The back side of the newer applique is a little different than the older one and without the black plastic on there it just didnt seem there would be anywhere for the tape to stick to.
Good to know. maybe the black plastic should be treated with a plastic adhesion promoter for the tape just as if it was going to get painted.
I guess I could call my dealer but I get conflicting definitions of fitment on the internet on this part #, does anyone know if this is the correct one for current models ? some ads say 2017-2020 and others say 2020 up.
