Yes, pump & pickup tube NEED to be renewed. They're both done. Chain, maybe - it definitely would make the xfer as new. At least if the planet gears are good.
I didn't get to that today, bit of a short day in the garage today...
Also I have to see what was the part that disintegrated itself, as there's a lot of metal in there. It looks like it could be a locking ring, but I have to count the parts before I'm sure. Although some kits seem to have those included, so I might as well replace all of them anyways.
Case is open on the table. New parts have just been ordered. We'll see when they arrive, as I'm on the other side of Atlantic... Usually it takes about a week. We'll see if Xmas will mess up their delivery times.
Hopefully I can get to putting the Xfer together over the Xmas holidays.
Got the bearing kit finally on Friday. Only problem was that they didn't pack the fragile pieces well and both the range fork inserts were broken upon arrival. Naturally I did contact the seller, but they haven't replied yet. The inserts are the long gray ones (graphite?) like in the attached pic. They both had broken in two.
The 2WD/4WD selector fork uses 3 of those white inserts. But my question is to someone who REALLY knows these transfer cases! I've seen the NP273 range selector forks also equipped with similar white inserts. AND my kit came with both of them AND they do fit. So, my question is: What's the difference? Why the two different styles? And why couldn't I substitute mine with the white ones? (My case had those long gray ones installed. - One ok, one missing.)
She'll be orrite, just change the fluid and have a
But yes, that looks familiar. My previous xfer case that I fixed had similar issue. (A NP271 under a Jeep.) The Jeep had had a close encouter with a Toyota. It got hit to the left front wheel. The hit was hard enough that it bent the front axel back and the front drive shaft pushed the xfer case in half...
This time my Ford's NP273 looked just fine, but when I opened it up it was "a bit" messy inside. Oil pump was toast and that destroyed pretty much all the bearings... ...also some of the plastic inside had melted.
That's what happens when it's left in 4x4 on black top. That's what this customer did on his Excursion. The phone call I got was "I think I have a leak." He was right.
If you don't think you did, check the motor. It may of failed in 4x4.
Now it seems I need some locking rings and the clutch springs also renewed. The latter I've found online (horridly expensive shipping with the first seller I found), but haven't found those locking rings that I need yet...
Thanks for the idea, but finding a good used in Finland (for a reasonable price) is next to impossible. - Also this is not a complicated one to rebuild, nor is it my first. It's just been a few years since my last one. (Was it not for the missing parts, it'd be already in the truck.) - That's why i'm just hunting for parts.
For some reason I'm not able t get the Drive sprocket hub (1), Clutch gear (2), or Drive sprocket (3) off! (Have a look at the photos below.)
Clutch gear and drive sprocket are stuck fast on the drive sprocket hub. Cannot find the sprocket retaining ring. I'm guessing that was the one retaining ring that was munched and lying on the bottom of the case (luckily stuck to the magnet).
The Drive sprocket hub rotates freely, but does have a lot of play. About 0.5 mm (0.02") on the front side and about 1 mm (0.04") on the rear (drive socket-side). BUT the hub will not slide out, like I think it should.(Clutch gear retaining ring is off.)
ANY IDEAS? - ANYBODY? - ANYWHERE? - ANYSomething...
PS. Sorry about the chaos in my garage... ...been meaning to clean it... ...for couple of years now...
Have you tried compressed air to be sure all the teeth are clean of
any fragments? Also are you using a press or just the hammer method?
Time to get the 10X magnifying lens out and start going over the ring groves.
87crewdually: Had a look at that video and that's why I thought it should come out fairly easy.
Yahiko: Gotta try compressed air. I was trying hammer, as I have no press to handle this. Gotta see if I can borrow one... ...and you're right about the magnifying glass...
