I dont even use my a/c but the compressor locked up, and it is burning up the belt.
I need to know if it is possible to get a shorter belt and bypass the compressor altogether. If anyone knows please help!
From doing some reading, I think i have determined that i cant bypass the compressor. The question i am left with is, how can i tell what I need to do to get the pulley moving again? I dont know the hows or whats about the pulley, bearings, clutch, compressor etc. Do i need a new compressor or not?
Originally posted by dookeh I hope you are right! But i dont know where the heck to find out or not. I am looking all over the 'net and cant find out anything for sure.
Go to, or call your local auto parts store and ask.
I don't know for sure, but on my non-a/c '88 460 i used to own, there was an idler pulley bolted in where the compressor would have been.
You probably just need to replace the bearing in the A/C pulley/clutch. Its not that hard to do I believe.
Another possibility is buying a "core" compressor from a junkyard. Although good ones often go for $100 or so, all you want is one that has a smooth spinning pulley. Make clear to the yard you could care less whether it "works" or not. With a little shopping you should be able to scrounge one up for about the price of a new belt.
Failing that, get a new clutch for the time being - when you finally do buy a new compressor (you'll hear your wallet screaming when you do) you can take the clutch off the old one and put it on the new one.
