V10 Engine Dies on Cold Start

2000 F250 SD XLT V10 with 140K on odometer

Now that cold weather has arrived on the initial start in the morning the engine fires right up and runs for a second or two, then dies. It takes 2 or 3 starts before it will continue to run/idle.

I have no idea, and fear, what it will do when really cold temps arrive.

Any clues/hints/idea as to cause of this situation, where I should be looking and what I should do to try and correct this problem?

Thanks for your input. It is appreciated.

I think the idle air control valve maybe a good place to start especially if it runs smooth after you get it going. They have a habit of gumming up. Do you notice that when you put it in gear it bogs down and revs it's self back up to normal idle or if you rev it up in park it will do the same thing bog down the rev back to normal idle.

X2 on the AIC valve. Had this happen on my dads v-10. Kinda a pain to reach, of course the bolts come out towards the fire wall instead of you being able to see them. And your assembling by feel. Probably an 1hr start to finish by the time you get tools out an such. Not sure if they can be cleaned or not. Someone will chime in if so. Think it was around $60 5 years ago or so when we replaced it.

Sorry for taking so long to respond. Tx Mike for lead on IAC. Makes a lot of sense to me. As it is cold outdoors, not likely I shall be turning any wrenches on the engine for a while, but I shall put the advice in my memory bank, and on my "to do" list.

I would add that I decided to try turning the key on and waiting a second or two before cranking the starter. So far that seems to help: The engine fires up and stays running instead of dieing; at fast idle for a short period, than drops down to normal idle.
