Driving a little faster, better mpg....

Our 2013 Durango has a 3.6L V6 and it's rated at 25mpg on the freeway. We typically drive 70-80 mph. At that speed we usually get 20mpg. Last year we drove behind a moving van from Sacramento to Escondido at 55-60 mph. We got the promised 25mpg! To us, it is Not worth slowing down to save fuel. Even a 20% reduction is not worth the extra drive time. Jag

Wow.. I usually take around 40 seconds to hit 50 mph. That is interesting.. taking 30 seconds uses up more gas than 15 and here I was going as slow as possible. I am going to have to try that.
Some cars use more gas at 65 mph but I don't think my truck does. Almost no difference between 55 and 65 but definitely when I'm going 75.

When I traded my 2014 with 5.0 and 3.55 gear. after the first week I had it I never reset one of the trip sets . The millage turned over for the forth time on it but the gas used and avg millage stayed current , ended up with 33,125 miles and a avg of 19.1 and that's with some towing not much a little off road a lot of snow . It was at 19 but when I added the edge tuner last summer it brought it up to 19.1 . Other trip set I change almost every time I filled the gas . What it said I used (gas)and what I filled up (gas)was always real close . But I didn't drive it hard I have a 76 vette for that.

I could swear my 2012 5.0 with 3.55 got better gas mileage than my current 2016 5.0 with 3.55. I regularly got 23 to 25 on the first one. This one, going 55 to 60 mph, accelerating slowly as possible, and I'm not able to break 19.2 after 500 miles.
Just now, I learned I get better gas mileage taking 15 seconds to accelerate to 50 instead of 30 seconds. I was doing it longer than 30 seconds.. so I'm going to try that.

You might find the sweet spot for your individual vehicle. First find the lowest speed you can go and still stay in high gear. Then try to hold that speed going up a moderate grade, say 2 degrees or thereabouts. If your vehicle can maintain that speed without downshifting, you might be at close to optimum MPG speed. For my truck that's right about 60 MPH. Maybe just a tad higher or lower than that.
