Hello, I did my first oil change at 3500 miles and the oil sure did look dirty. I know that's not necessarily a proper analysis but just thought I would mention it.
What I wanted to ask (without starting brand war) is what oil filter are you running? I have been using Fram Tough Guard filters in my vehicles for some time now and have not had any issues. I couldn't help but notice the Fram filter for this application is a little shorter than the OEM filter. Or is the original filter longer than Ford/motorcraft replacements? See pics below. I also checked Wix brand filters online and the case dimensions are identical to the the Fram. It's probably okay especially since I change my oil at sooner than recommended intervals but a smaller filter is concerning to me.
Thanks for your time!
Rick

Reason: Sorry- forgot to add the pics
I also use Motorcraft. No need to reinvent the wheel here, and I generally think those who designed my engine are best qualified to design the oil filter. Nothing against Fram, but you can't go wrong with OEM parts.
MC filter for Ford applications. I also always used Fram filters till I became a member here and started seeing small differences in filter construction. My older Ford always got a 3000 mile oil change and a filter should last fine for 3K miles. However, on the new trucks, Ford has said to follow the OLM for oil change recommendations which can run up to 10K miles. I dump every 5K-6K miles.
Hi guys- I apologize for the delay in getting back to a thread that I started. But a big thank you to everyone that replied especially J.Griff for the picture and info showing the original filter being a little larger. Also special thanks to QwkTrip for the link to the oil filter comparison.
In the filter comparison, I noticed the Wix brand that I sometime use seem pretty good. Actually more filter media than the Motorcraft.
Thanks again and happy truckin!

SIXD9R, with your Wix filter do you have any noise at start up? Was this fiter the Wix XP ?
The Fram Tough Guard and Ultra line have proven to be great filters. Silicone adbv and synthetic filter media. Better quality construction then the motorcraft and Wix, better filter media. And better filtration ratings. Up to 99.9% at 20 microns vs only 80% at 20 microns for the motorcraft. It also has more capacity. The purolator made motorcrafts have been failing the past few years. Nothing has been done to correct the issue. Torn filter media issues.
Fram may get a lot of hate on on the internet. But they are one of if not the biggest filter company. They stand behind their product. And their quality has improved significantly. I used to hate them. Now I won't use anything but them. Why hold a grudge? They have turned around and make great filters!
