Yea I wish my '16 had a little more diesel noise. When we got it my wife said.....this is a diesel? She was used to our old 7.3 with a 4" exhaust, I don't want it that loud but a little more would be nice.
Maybe the truck has diesel engine sound pumped thru the speakers like the ecoboots have V8 truck sound? Because I swear that mine is louder inside than it is outside. It's not 7.3 or 6.0 loud by any means though. I'd say just a touch quieter than my 2010 6.4 was inside but outside the 6.4 was much louder.
The engine itself has nothing changed about it that would make it louder. However, it is now surrounded by an aluminum box instead of a steel box. Ford stated the firewall is steel "because the steel firewall blocks noise better." Also note that for the first time, the 6.7L is equipped with a hood pad. I'm guessing the AL resonates sound differently.
I personally don't think it is any louder or quieter than my 2016 was.
When it is cold outside, these engines are *significantly* louder and sound more like a traditional diesel. I believe pilot injection is off until a certain coolant or oil temp is reached? You can definitely hear it switch on, the engine goes from rattling diesel to smooth, almost gasoline-like engine sound. I prefer the rattling diesel sound.

Your right maybe it is the colder weather, just was not so prevalent in the 2011.
