I got $25,250 for my '13 F150 FX4 (loaded) with 71,4xx miles. I was in a fender bender about 2 months ago so I probably could have gotten more had that not happened. Dealer kept it and has it on their lot for $32,990 right now.
I wondered what the dealer was going to do with my truck because they seemed excited when they saw it so I just checked their website and, sure enough, it's on there under the used inventory...I have to say, seeing it for sale on the dealer website gives me mixed emotions. Don't get me wrong, I love my new truck and and happy I traded it, but seeing pics of my F150, with all my upgrades, on the dealer site affected me more than I thought it would...man, I loved that truck!
I'm with ya. I tried to sell mine privately for a month, first at $22k and then at $20k. The dealer offered to buy it from me for $15k and we decided to take the offer so I could get the new truck ordered. (Then traded our car in when the truck came in).
With all the stuff I had done to it, they seemed to think they would have no problem selling it. It is still there almost 2 months later.
They have it on their lot and website which, like you said it kind of sucks seeing it there. They started at $24k and are down to $22k. 2006 6.0 F350 DRW Lariat FX4 148,000 miles
2011 f250 clean 120K, dealer gave me $28,000.00. I had another dealer offer me 24K, I laughed at them, and said they forgot to appraise the truck past the front bumper....
It bought it 5 years ago for $48k, so $4000 depreciation per year, I'm happy, hope it goes this way with the new one....either way it just cost money to have these beautiful trucks under our butt..... I get more complements on this truck than any other one I had.....
Dealer gave me $32,000 for my 75,000 mile 2011 Lariat 4x4 in great condition. The driver side mirror wouldn't fold ($1,200) and the reduction in taxes was almost $2,000 so I calculated the real value to me at $35,000. That is pretty much the high end of the current market so I was happy. It was the first time I traded in a car on a new purchase. I've always sold them on my own and done much better than I could with a dealer.
Here in WA state if we sell the trade in ourselves we get screwed out of the sales tax trade in credit. My trade was valued at $50k, low KBB dealer trade in value. At our 8% sales tax the sales tax credit was $4,000 so $54k which was $2k over high KBB.
If I sold the trade in myself I lose that trade in tax credit so I would have had to sell my trade for $54k just to break even on what the dealer gave me.

That was my thinking too. It was nice to have the dealer offer a realistic number. When you add the value of the sales tax and any repairs, if that's close to market value on similar vehicles, a dealer trade makes sense. My truck sold the next day so it worked out for the dealer also.
I bought a 2015 Explorer for my wife and tried to do the same but the value offered for the trade was way off. In that case I had her CX9 professionally detailed and sold it on my own. $5,000 is nothing to shake a stick at, so to speak.
An interesting note. I got an email from Sirius a couple of days later informing me that my subscription had been automatically cancelled on my old truck. They somehow detected that the truck had changed ownership. They even credited my Amex $85 which was unexpected. I was intending to call them to cancel but they beat me to it.

I had to go to 5 Ford dealers to get a decent trade offer that wasn't an insult. I was ready to give up then this last dealer, small dealership out in the boonies up and offered me a fair amount.
It's all about timing on these trade values. My last 15 F350 that I traded I waited till the dealer had little to no used Super Duty's for sale. Some dealers have a lot of them and others don't.
I think it also helps having a high trim level as most dealers are loaded up with Lariats.
