Locking Hubs and 4x4

The auto Ford hubs are not electric...they are vacuum operated. The manual override is exactly for the time when they fail...so you don't lose 4x4 ability if you need it. You can manually lock them in, same as the full manual version.

This new 2017 is my 5th Super Duty. I've had two before with manual 4x4 and now 3 with ESOF. No issue at all with shifting between 2Hi and 4Hi on the move. Just make sure to release the accelerator when you do it, and make sure the wheels are all turning at the same speed. Don't do it in a corner.

It is more satisfying to manually shift a truck into 4x4. It is less satisfying to have to get out and lock the hubs in. Typically, I'd lock my hubs in and leave them that way all winter. On full lock turns, the axle u-joints will bind slightly. With the hubs locked, try to avoid full lock turns. You will lose a small amount of mpg with the hubs locked in.

Thank you Troverman. Very informative on the auto hubs! I will just lock them in for winter like you did. I will only be using my truck for weekend excursions so it's no big deal for me to have manual hubs. I guess I'm paranoid of electric shift because I've heard of two times where the electric tranfer case has failed but I can't remember if it was Ford, Chevy or Ram.
Sometimes I'm pretty far out in the Colorado back country.
