Angry 2000 Exp. ABS Light

I just purchased a used 2000 Expedition with high miles. I have had it for 15 days and now the ABS light stays on. It wasn't on the first week and a half that I had it. When I start the car, all the lights light up, then they all go off except the ABS light. It stays on the entire time I am driving it. What could be the problem? I am very worried as I don't want to spend a lot to fix it. My husband is pretty good with cars. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

2000 Exp. ABS Light

Welcome to the forum.

First off, try resetting the PCM by disconnecting the battery for 20 minutes. This alone might clear the code. If not, there are ABS sensors at each of the wheels, check the connections or you might have a bad sensor. If the light remains lit after reattaching the battery cable, take your truck to Autozone and have them read the codes. They'll do it for free and it should help pinpoint the problem.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the advice Jim. We did take the car to autozone and they said there was nothing wrong, and I believe they told my husband that the thing they use to test it, doesn't cover ABS? Not sure, but in any event thank you and we will try the battery thing. Hope it works, don't really want to spend a lot on a car I just bought 2 weeks ago!

If the battery disconnect doesn't work, you might be heading to the dealership. They will have the correct analyzer to detect your problem. I looked in my service manual this evening and the number of problems with respect to ABS is practically endless (slight exaggeration, but there are very many codes).

Not the news you wanted to hear.

Really good chance it's the rear-differential speed sensor. About $20 at a Ford house and easier than a sprk plug to change. It fixed mine with the exact problem you describe.

Good luck!

2000 Exp. ABS Light

I had a similiar problem with my abs light and it turned out to be the sensor under the front passenger side seat. Something was pushed under it and kinked the wire. I straightened it out and the abs light turned off

Cool Thanks!

I love this board. I had a similar problem with my 2000 EB, the ABS light came on for no apparent reason one day. I checked with this board and saw the rear differential speed sensor replacemsnt solution. I spent $30 and 20 minutes to replace the sensor and no more ABS light! Probably saved me $150 by not going to the ford stealership! Thanks again! Now if I could figure out how to fix the crazy shudder and hiccups I feel from the rear of the vehicle while accelerating. I will post elsewhere about that, unless somebody has an idea they can email me. Thanks!

Talking

Hello Everybody,
I just wanted to thank you EXP owners for your Forum. I recently had an ABS Light On problem and didn't know what to do. My partner told be about this website. I registered and looked up the problem. I first unhooked the battery cable to see if the computer would reset, light still on. Next I checked the fuse, ok. finally I purchased the Rear Differential Speed Sensor for about $18.50. I wasn't sure where the sensor was so I asked the FORD delearship rep to print me a diagram which he then circled the area of interest. I changed it in about 15 minutes using only a 3/8 box wrench and a little muscle. Problem fixed. Thank You so much for your inquires. I will be checking for other items for my 2000 EXP XLT, 2WD.
