I didn't check the exciter voltage before I pulled it apart. I limped it back to the garage and on the way there, about 5 minutes, it went into total electrical shutdown. Gauges to zero, windows wouldn't go up and it started raining. Once in that condition I didn't dare restart it because I was thinking about the FICM I had rebuilt a year earlier.
With stock units going in, I think 140 upper and 130 lower??, do you think a wiring upgrade makes sense? I'm always a fan of bigger is better there, I never use 14awg running a house circuit. If I go the heavier wiring route should the inline breaker match the alt capacity or should I run 100 amp fuses there?
Returning to the truck tomorrow, it's 50 miles away from me.
Also want to mention that the melted main wire from the lower alternator has a v type break in it that looks like it could have come in contact with something and shorted. If so I'm sure that contributed to or started the problem. I have some very flexible 6 gauge stranded left from my house gen wiring and I'll use an inline screw connector and heat shrink to fix that break.
Small world Ed! I didn't even notice you were from Tryon. We love going up your way for side street pizza, it can't be beat! I'm betting you hit some pretty good traffic today in Spartanburg!
Dr., whenever I mention Tryon, even hundreds of miles away, the first thing people say is Side Street.
Spartanburg was a little busy but I can top that. My wife had to do a Trader Joes run and we were on Woodruff Rd. I don't know what we're thinking.
