Not an expert, but I don't think you are far off. Check the links here:

0.026" (If I remember right) is the factory shim setting for the Ford 9" pinion.

What does she feel like when you turn her now? Smooth as a baby's butt?

What's yer backlash at? I think you're aiming for ~ 0.012" - 0.014."

hey ty beast, factory B/L is .022 the factory shim i initially removed was .022.

B/L , according to R&P mfg instructions, is .006-.010 B/L im at .008 with the caps fully torqued seems smooth. every setting is right on the visual on the pattern i just cant tell myself

You do know you have to load the side gears to get an accurate pattern. Slip an axle in and let it drag on something

Me, I don't think the pattern is deep enough. I would also like to see a little more backlash.

If you're happy with it, I say go for it. If she starts singing' back there, some adjustments are needed.

Meaning the wear pattern on the pinion to ring isn't showing a full(er) engagement. This is just my opinion...

Again, my opinion....I think the backlash is too tight and would like to see 0.012"....It's impossible to determine "feel" over the internet but, with no load on the ring/pinion, I like the "feel" to be comparable to one's hand on a soccer ball rolling it across a flat surface, back and forth......smooooooth!.....with little effort. You'll notice the difference.

If you've got it to recommended specs, which it seems like you do, give 'er a whirl! You won't hurt anything.

Ahhh, hahaha! Years ago, my son built me a stealth garage. He must have taken the on-off button with him when he moved out 'cause I can't find it. So, I'm still stuck with the outdoor garage with Ol' Sol as my heater.

I hear ya on being "a distinguished old gentleman"... but I'm a grumpy old fart and don't like dancin' with the fat lady whilst under my vehicles any more than I have to. 'Cause "Daddy-O don't want no boom-de-boom playin' 'round hyah."

lmao with the winters you have there outside garage is impossible & they say they will get worse as the polar vortex (norht pole) has moved in youre direction. i grew up there & didnt cherish the winter specially the parking in the city here in oregon our winters are milder 40 - 50 last winter i didnt see a snowflake at my house.

thanks for the the direction again i get it you explained it well im back out again in a few hours to do it ill post a pic with the results.
the videos i had as a guide i thought were articulated well the preload on the ring gear was a good visual & i feel its ok in fact everything was easy to follow except the visual by me to determine the pattern against the instruction manual hell anymore i get confused when theres more than 1 red light , only kidding..... one grump to another thanks

Hahaha! When winter hits here (I'm in a rural area of the Pay State), I'm dressed up like Nanook of the North to play with my vehicles.

I remember winter/spring/summer/fall in the Pacific Northwest - spent 20 some odd years on the West Coast after I got out of the service. Loved it...one day I'll be back.... Man, I'm hoping, anyway.

I really think you're good to go...like I said before, all that is just me...and I know it can be a byatch to be pulling the carrier.... pinion ....berrins....and changing shims, etc, etc. Try her out and listen specifically when on the coast side.

Grump to grump - you're welcome.

HEY NANOOK ,lol wow man this looks a lot better, more contact like you suggested, i was reluctant just where to go with this & more than the factory 8-10 . before this adjustment i was at .0085 now im at .0115 i feel alot better about this pattern i can see now it appears more like the printed reference patterns. btw I use a rag around the pinion to provide resistance & 5 rotations each way

thank you so much for steering me in the right direction happy safe holidays to ya

HAHAHA!

I just came inside to warm up me finners....I can feel the Polar Vortex smackin' me already!

She does look better with that wear pattern on....mebbe slightly skimpy, but better. Now she can wear that revealing little red dress instead of a moo-moo!

Let us know how she sounds when you take her out?

You're more than welcome! Happy to help. Now you be expert on these! Happy and safe holidays to you, too.

Beast got your ears on good buddy or anyone that could steer me in the right direction. finely got the fuel vapor lines connected hope im correct? took her out for a test ride & the fat lady is singing most noticeably when coasting & 35 mph on accel & coast so shes coming out tomorrow luckily i found some rear marking compound here, whew! snowflakes on the valley floors & 40'or so guess st. nick must of heard i would be outside tomorrow lol. question is=====>
mfg backlash is .006-.010 im at .0115 now how do i accomplish a broader pattern across the whole tooth? add or subtract a few thousands to the pinion?
