I have an 77 with a 460 that is a beat up old farm truck but runs great. I also have an 86 with 460 that jumped timing and caused fire this summer and it has sentimental value it needs to be a daily driving. Can anyone tell me if the 77 beguine is interchangeable with the 86??? That would save me a lot of money in the swap...
Oh and don't worry the 77 that I'm pulling from is not the Supercab I have! That is a totally separate project that I'm going to be using the old farm truck for parts and such already anyways.
1977 460 will be internally balanced. Mid-year 1979: FoMoCo changed the 460, it's externally balanced, has a weighted crank spacer. The block casting number is D9TE-6015-AB
All 1968/82 460's were only available with the C6. 1983 was the first year the 460 was available w/a M/T & 4WD
All 1983/97 F250/350 460's have a hydraulic clutch.

Forgive me but I don't have much deep motor knowledge. Does the different balancing and other differences eliminate it as an option for certain or just bring up some extras that also need addressed if used for swap?
Sorry I'm not more knowledgeable with your original answer.

Reading between the lines above, if your 86 is a automatic, you should be fine, use the older style flexplate, not the 86 flexplate since it's balanced differently.
If your 86 is a manual transmission, you have some head scratching and figuring to do. Do they make a internally balance flywheel for a 460 manual transmission? Someone may reply that knows, just wait a little bit.
You might have to search the aftermarket for a flywheel if you need one. For example, Ford never made a 4 barrel intake for the 351m/400 engines, they were all 2bbl from the factory. But the aftermarket does make aluminum 4bbl intakes for those engines.
I'm not as familiar with the FE engines so I don't remember if they are internal or external balance, but I do know a 390 flywheel will bolt up to a 460 crank. They aren't as thick though so you may still have issues with the hydraulic clutch.
If there is no internal balance flywheel available that'll work with your clutch disk you can run a 390 flywheel and have a machine shop drill and tap it for whatever pressure plate you want to run.
Id think a driveline shop could mill the weight off and zero balance the '86 flywheel for less than the $$$ L&L one.
I have no idea how many 390 flywheels are still available.
