1968 2wd brake drums

I know I should be swaping the front drums for discs, but I just want to drive my truck. Anyway... I just replaced all of the hardware, shoes, wheel cylinders, master cylinder and picked up my new drums, (all four of them). I found out that the housing for the wheel bearings that also holds the lugs is pressed into the old drums. If I wanted to use the old housings, what in the world do I have to do to get them off the old drums???

You have to press out the wheel studs to remove the hub from the old drum; reverse the procedure to attach the hub to the new drum. This is also a good time to evaluate the wheel studs to determine if they need replacing; they're not terribly expensive. Be sure to bring one with you to the store if you decide to replace them to make sure you get the right size; those things all look alike once you get a few in your hand! It's possible to remove the studs with a heavy hammer but you are going to need new ones for sure if you use that method. The press is the best way to go.

Talking 1968 2wd brake drums

Thanks for the info. I finally got around to knocking out the old studs today. Most of them looked ok, but I figured since new ones were about a buck each I replaced all of them. Thanks again!

A trick that several people use when installing new drums is to carefully enlarge the holes so the new drum will seat all the way on without having to be pressed on.

Are you talking about the wheel stud holes or the big one in the center? I am having trouble getting the front drums back together.

I do believe that he is talking about the center hole.

Maybe you could heat the drum in the oven to get it hot and expand then the hub would probably just slip in. Kinda like putting your ringear on your flywheel.
