This is my first post!! I recently got my second 86 F150. Unlike the last, this one is mint and rust free...... Slight issue (project), mouse nest in the heater box. Resistor ignited and melted the whole box, among other things. Does anyone know what make/model fords had an interchangeable heater box?? Only caveat is that it has A/C an I would like to keep it. It seems that finding one with A/Cis a lot harder.
The "standard" heater box is split up... trucks built before March 8, 1982 used one (actually, two) box, those built after used a different box. So, if you go to a junkyard and take a look at 1980-86 trucks, be sure you choose the correct vintage.
The "deluxe" heater box apparently never changed for all of 1980-86. It will say "HI OUTPUT" in raised letters if you're looking at a deluxe box.
Be sure to get one from a truck that has factory A/C, it's different than the non-factory-A/C box.
We are limited on Junk yards up here in VT (I found 2 that did not have A/C). Trying to search the internet, I figure the more models/years I can search on the internet... the better my chances will be to find one.

ctubutis,
Interesting, I think we are heading in the right direction. Only problem I have is that my entire heater box (and inner fender cover) is a blob of melted plastic. What are the odds that the vin# indicates if it is a "HI OUTPUT" or just standard A/C or non-A/C.
