Alright So i just bought a 94 F150 xlt 4.9 liter straight six. First let me start by saying im not a mechanic but Ive been doing all the work on it myself and so far i am doing good. Im changing out the rear tank fuel pump and I have no idea which one would be the most beneficial to my truck. it has a rebuilt engine with about 40k miles on it but its at 250k so on the odometor. Can someone give me some ideas on what a good quality fuel pump would be like. for example is a higher gph better than a lower? is that bad for fuel consumption meaning id burn through gas faster? Pros and cons style if possible.
I know a little old and you may have gotten a pump but here is my .02
Only time I would use a higher GPH pump is if the motor had work done to it (built up) that it runs at a higher RPM than stock thus needing/using more fuel
OR
Running WOT with heavy loads using more fuel.
Other wise stock pump will work 99.9% of the time.

Not much help here, "but": The last job on my '89 F150 (late '89 build date, actually uses '90 parts on A/C) was a 38-gal fuel tank, using the original in-tank fuel pump. It crapped out one day not long after the rebuild was complete. I phoned the machine shop that had done all the work. Chris sent a wrecker to retrieve me and truck from the mountain, and he substituted a (shudder!) Chevrolet fuel pump. It was a lot heavier than the OEM specified for the big-six, but it does the job and has not had a hiccup in 6 yrs. I don't know what the Chevy pump was designed for, just that it was a Chevy fuel pump, and a lot heavier, maybe 2 or 3x heavier than the OEM Ford pump.
