Hey guys new member here! I need some big help on motors to chose from! I want a motor that would be good for high performance you know some street racing but nothing really overboard like blowers or turbos or nos really don't need any of this. I don't really want people to know what's under the hood, you know the element of surprise. I have a 1979 Ford F-100 with a straight 6 and i was thinking of putting in a 400 from a 1965 ford F-100 or a 460 from a 1968 F-250 Dually. Good decision - Bad Decision can anyone help? Also i want to know what i can put on both engines to get the most performance you know headers, differential, gears, cam, intake, carb you know all the goodies.

Hey thereFlea463 and welcome to FTE!
Having the choice, I would go with the 460! What a torque monster! You can pick just about everything from the Ford Racing Catolog. ($5.00 at any dealership). My choice for a carb is the Preditor. They're adjustable from 320cfm to 900cfm and now they have a street version with a choke set-up. They are the same price as all the competitors, but without all the parts.
You may find keeping tires on it a bit much $$$, but they're only tires! Some type of traction set-up, like ladder bars would keep that to a minimum.
Whatever you decide on, just have fun and enjoy the build-up. Things will be tough at times, but just hop on here and will help you any way we can. There are a lot of here that wish we could be there with you.... HEE HEE!
Talk with you later....

I vote 351w, not as powerful in stock form as the 460, cheaper to build up, lots of hi-po parts, commonality with the very common 302 and hard to spot differences under the hood between a 302 and a 351w. BONUS, you will get a little better gas milage with the 351w than you will get with the 460. 2-3 MPG's better.

scooter and fishin both have good points, but what ever you do stay away from the 400 boat anchor. If you have a 460 already i would go for it. if not the 351 might be the better way to go. just do your research

good luck

the 302 is a good motor but not the best for a truck. especially sence the one in your fairlane is setup way different then for a truck. Trucks need low rpm power, they rarly see rpms higher then 4500 so you must take that into thought. i have a 302 in my fullsize bronco and get about 10-13 mpg , a 351 would actually get about the same and not have to work as hard to move my brick on wheels.
keep that motor in your fairlane and find a bigger motor for your truck, or go with the 300-6, it gets good mileage and is a real torquey motor.

Hey KemicalBurns thanks alot, i have a inline 6 in my truck already but i really want some kind of street performance. Unless i can trick out my inline six with a carb, camshaft, intake, manifold you know the works, maybe i can get some speed out of that demon.

thanks.

the 300 to 351W swap is a very common swap for Ford Trucks. Many users here have done this, and could be very useful in providing pointers and advice. The greatest thing about that swap is you don't have to touch your transmission, and all you have to do is buy motor mounts from any parts store for a '79 with a 302, and you can bolt the 351 in with no fabrication required. I think Shorty headers are the way to go here, I haven't been able to find someone who makes full length headers for the 351 in that truck. TK

Hey Flea, there is alot of performance stuff for the 300-6. I have read were that motor was putting down better numbers in the 1/4 then most hopped up v8's. Talk with the guys in the 300-6 forum they can send you to the right places. Clif*************** would be a good place to start. they make a 4barrel intake for your application.

but i will say that the 351 would give you more with less effort

good luck

Hey TorqueKing! I don't have the current JEGS catolog in front of me, but I did find out that they do carry long headers. I was given this PN by another brother at FTE on this subject.
520-6802 $329.00. Then again, this may be for a Ranger 302 conversion. Man, I've got to start writing this stuff down better.
Talk with you guys later....

i have had experience with 302 engines. i love them. i actually just built one.90 model block bored .060 with the same year heads totally redone speedpro coated hypereutectic or whatever pistons 286 duration cam 474 exhaust lift high volume oil pump wieiend 4 bbl. intake edelbrock 600cfm carb that was supposed to be a 650 when i bought it 1 inch spacer.i have some heads off of a 76 mustang 2 with none of those air bumps and restrictions that i want to get redone and shave. but it is nice and i actually started it up 3 weeks ago for the first time it is fast for an extended cab. i made it for a 71 short wheel base but traded that for a stang

Sounds nice and fast! So now you are going to put it into a Stang? What year? Got any Pics? Sorry about that, I got a bit excited there!! There's nothing about the 302 that I can say a bad thing about. It's durable, fairly light. You can make serious torque, or horse power with it. And you can use many of the Ford Performance parts in the block for up to 400hp.
Well, I'll let you get back to work.... Talk with you later....
