Who makes Motorcraft oil? Ford isn't making oil, so someone is making it for them. The question is, will someone keep producing the old oil or move to the new one to keep things standardized?

Supposedly Havoline makes FoMoCo oil...

For historical perspective, At one point, a long time ago, Motorcraft actually made it's own oil...

Actually Motorcraft oil is made by Connoco Phillips and I suspect when they upgrade their oil it will meet Fords new specification. I figure worst case I'll just purchase my oil from the Ford dealer until this issue gets resolved.

Ok Shell Rotella is safe for now I would guess.

Shell Rotella in the old containers is acceptable to use, but the new containers are not. The Rotella T4 and T5 in the new containers is the new CK-4 formulation, but it doesn't state it because they can't publish the new specification on their containers until some time in December.

I recall reading Shell product release a while back was the T6 in the new repackaged containers is still the original CJ4 formula but it will be changed over to the CK4 in the near future.

Hopefully this gets resolved soon, I have enough for my next oil change, but I will need another one by the beginning of summer.

I suppose they put in some additives to give it the proper protection.

senix - Who knows. The original intent was for CK-4 to replace CJ-4. And FA-4 to be the new standard.. Which means next year we will see FB-4 or CL-4?
--
When the new spec was announced. CK-4 was for 2017 and older diesel engines and FA-4 was for newer diesel engines coming out that were designed to be used with it... Even Shell says so on that link. I was surprised that CK-4, in and of itself, wasn't good for our trucks. I never expected FA-4 though.

API FA-4 oils are designed for use in select, late-model diesel engines and in most cases should not be used to replace older formulations, such as CJ-4. API FA-4 is noted for its fuel efficiency and emissions enhancements. API FA-4 is designed to meet 2017 model year on-highway greenhouse gas (GHG) emission standards. - See more at: Ford will approve new Shell Rotella CK-4 oil, but not FA-4 | Medium Duty Work Truck Info

That's good news that Shell will have the new Ford specification very soon.

So, Rotella will be up to specks soon so to speak and most probably all the other major oil manufacturers.... End of thread.

Anyone read the oil cap requirements on our 2017 engines? So apparently the cap will be wrong soon? I've seen plenty of oil caps that say nothing, some say "oil," and some say the required weight. Very few post an API standard.

So far all the new oil specs. have been backwards compatible. I don't see that changing. It would confuse 1/2 the population if not more. The majority of people I know look at the weight and don't have a clue as to Api specs.

Rotella will meet Ford's specs and I suspect most others will. Ford even had their own spec for CJ-4 which was included in CJ-4. The new CK-4 is not available until December so, if you buy your own, plan ahead. FA-4 is not for our trucks, but for the big semi tractors so their is no need to worry about it. Just check labels on any CK-4 to be sure it contains the Ford spec WSS-M2C171-F1 as well.
