Take a look near the top of the Excursion page in the 'Tech Folder'. If there isn't a specific thread on the unit bearings.... look at a ball joint replacement thread for instructions on R&Ring the bearings. They have to come out to do ball joints.

They can certainly be done with average mechanical ability. I'm currently collecting parts to do mine in the spring (along with ball joints & related). The unit bearings on Amazon run between $160 and $220 (each) for a decent brand.

1/2 day job if you're a little mechanically inclined and have basic tools.

Assuming it's a 4wd here?

Don't skimp on the bearings. The cost savings is not worth the inevitable failure and having to replace them, warranty or not, within 18 months. I'm on the third one on the driver side and second on the passenger. Funds have been snug so I haven't been able to step back up to Timken/OEM.

Either I've done it enough to be proficient at it, or its just not that difficult... 3 hours for both sides including disassembling the Warn's and greasing them back up plus miscellaneous front end greasing as well.

Don't forget a thin coat of anti-seize on the mounting surface to the axle tube, makes future removal easier.

I did this on our 2010 Explorer 2wd. The worst part is beating out the old bearing unit. Once that's done the rest is easy.

Beating out the old bearing? Dunno about the Explorers, but there's no beating out of a bearing that's necessary with the Excursions.

Jkelley, have you ever done the front brakes on your rig?

Easy to look up at Summit Racing or any other online place. They run around $10 bucks for the inner bearing and around $13 bucks for the outer bearing.

Click this link and scroll down to the wheel bearing part of the post. You'll see how easy it is.

Wheel bearings on a 2wd Excursion are ridiculously easy. It's also a great time to brakes, ball joints, and tie rods.

Some recommendations:

-This is a great time to do ball joints. I did a write up a few years ago, really easy to do, just takes a little time: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...ml#post8933856

-2wd tie rods are also easy to do as they come out as one assembly. (I DON'T recommend Moog ball joints or tie rods. They're quality has gone south)

-Lucas Red 'n Tacky wheel bearing grease (red) works awesome, sticks nicely and lubricates well.

-Timken and ONLY Timken wheel bearings unless you want to do it again soon.

Yep, same setup

...as your van ?
My van? What van?

If providing a link for you means I own the vehicle listed in the thread, hang on one second, i'll be right back! I'm gonna go link you to a few Mercedes Benz AMG threads and a half dozen 2017 F250 diesel truck threads!

Damn dude! Gwan and burst my bubble! No new vehicle for me!

For repacking, I've use the method listed in that thread (pack by hand), but I also have this tool:
