Okay guys I know this has been talked about but I want to know which BRAND to get.
I am installing Cranes adjustable valvetrain conversion kit which allows the use of rockers for 3/8 stud mount. At the same time, I'm swapping coil springs and adding roller rockers. What I want to know is the horror stories and success stories. Brand loyalty, to me, goes as far as "the budy system". When it comes to my hard earned cash I don't screw around, I want my money's worth.
I have heard from several that Harland Sharp's are very good and Scorpion are newer but better, but from only one person. I understand that Crane Energizers are their "cheap" alternative but still a good peice.
My budget limit for the rockers are $200, so Comp Pro Magnum's and the like are out of the question. Between the choices given what have you used and what were the results? If there are other's that fit the budget for 3/8's stud's feel free to share them as well.
Thanks!!
the comp cams light weight all stell roller rockers look very good but i havent tried a set, and im not talking about the roller (tip), im talking there full roller rockers. DW
Crane Gold Race are my weapon of choice, I've used them very successfully on Chevies. I use Crane Energizers on my Daily Driver. The energizers are very durable and will give you all the benefits of the premium pieces. TK
I'm leaning toward the Energizers, even though the Harlands look stronger.
I think I can pretty much dismiss the Scorpions. But they sure do LOOK pretty! lol
Alright there is now a week left, what should I get? I'm most worried about retainer and guide clearance. I'm also concerned about "vacuum die-cast aluminum alloy " of the Energizers. I've never heard of this before.
Both rockers are the same price; about $195 (not going any higher).
The vacuum cast of the Energizers is nothing to worry about. It won't have the superior finish of the billet/cnc machined premium ones, but it will be structurally exceptional. They make them vacuum-cast because it is much easier on their tooling, saving them and therefore you money. All I can do is speak from experience on the Energizers; I love mine and I can't see why anything would perform better. I like the Crane Gold Race as my favorite because of the custom applications they have available (self-aligning for Chevy LT-1, or wide body rockers for BB-Chevy).
I also have the crane valvetrain kit. I went with 1.6 ratio Crane Energizer rockers and trick flow hardened pushrods (although they are not necesary with the poly locks included in the valvetrain kit). However, I don't have an opinion on them yet, should find out tonight when the truck is fired up. I am excited to say the least.
Honestly, I couldn't tell you how to do it. lol I had someone else do the cam work. when I start it up, I want to be confident knowing it was done properly. I couldn't think of anything worse than finding out that something was put together wrong.
I'm almost wishing I had!
The cam swap went well, it wasn't my first time but it was my first with a ford.
I tore a 200 I-6 head apart for a valve job and they didn't have these caps. Now I'm lost. I'll do a quick search and post this question if I don't find anything.
Good luck with the initial start up! Let me know how it goes.
Sure thing, if you don't find anything, I'll ask the guy who did mine and see how he went about it. I have never done any engine work, so I figured it wouldn't be the best thing to start out doing. I am planning on purchasing a mid 60's stang, so I may someday build an engine up myself since it could be down for longer periods of time.
I didn't vote.
I went with the Crane Energizers. Also considered the Scorpions. I think either would be a fine choice. But I could get, and see, the Cranes before buying, so I did.
Don't know about the other option. I've heard of them, but that's about it.
Still not enough engine time with the rockers for me to really evaluate them. No problems, and don't expect any.
