I am close to you in Edmonton. The truck was a farm truck for many years and only wenthe to the field and back so I was thinking of adding some ATF and then dump the oil and filter and see. I plan to do a wet dry compression test this weekend. My thoughts were that if the valves aren't fully open or closed with gummy lifters maybe the blow by is sneaking past the valves. It was less when I got it but as I drive it it becomes more.
I'm pretty sure with that much blow by it will be leaking past the rings. The compression test will tell all.
Remember the engine is under load at this point to make it make noise ... idle and cruising it isn't there. The vacuum reading from the motor is still >18 so it seems strong and performance is good. Gotta see after the compression test ...
So being cooler outside now the air inside is warm not hot ... anyone got any tricks to resealing the heater core without totally removing it? I heard drilling out the rivets and screws to reseal.
It would be best if you completely removed and cleaned your heater box, as leaves and debris can build up in surprising volume and be a fire hazard. Mine had tons of dry leaves and even some live ammunition when I opened it up!
I agree with you guys ... just didnt want to pull it being winter but I guess I have to. I read that it is almost four hours to complete ... does that sound right? Might as well only do it once
While I wait for the auto store to open for a heater core I am trying to find information on a stumble cruising, at idle ... beautiful and under acceleration the same but crusing it kind of stumbles like a overfuel condition or something.
At least the heater core should be easy with no A/C ... getting cooler here.
The noise was detonation ... way too far advanced. My "trusty" old timing light is lying to me so I got a cheap Wally one and set it. First to 12 degrees which is a little too far so backed it off to 6 and life seems great now. Runs smooth, now I might see what kind of actual mileage I will get
Last night got a new used muffler installed ... straight pipe till now. Now it sounds more like the truck I new ... quiet. I was 18 once and the noise is getting old for me, sometimes just cruising quietly is the best.
Now today is time to change out the headlight switch, need to see some dash lights other than bypassing the dimmer. Does the headlight switch pull just pull out?
Been too long off here, but the truck is running smooth. The lifters will be done in the spring and thats all I see so far this winter. Even in 30 below the truck is toasty inside. Sure cant wait till spring, been a long winter so far.
