Steering Wheel - Leather Magic!!
Getting my Excursion ready to sell, I had to address the very dirty and "badly stained" leather steering wheel. I was not, however, going to spend $275 to have someone recover it for me. Consequently, I did a lot of internet searching and reading, and came up with a solution which worked out very well and only cost me about $3 and only took about 10 minutes. Some of you may benefit from a similar approach.
Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser, available at Walmart. Might not be news to some of you, but it was for me.
Couple of critical comments.
1. My leather was not torn or worn through, just nasty stained with blackish/brownish oily dirt.
2. The Magic Eraser "sponge" can be abrasive, so you have to be very gentle with it and not work it too long or hard on the leather surface.
3. Rinse the sponge often.
4. Clean the steering wheel in multiple stages, letting it dry completely between stages so you can see if you've gotten it clean enough or if you're going too far.
5. The leather may dry out a bit, so you might want to wipe it down with some leather-specific conditioning cream once you're done.
In the end, my steering wheel looked really good. Not perfect. Not brand new. Just really good, especially given its 200K mile life.
Sorry for the lack of pictures, but I was working in the dark and I really did not expect it to work as well as it did.
Always worth it to keep a pack in your truck, they work just as good on you as they do on your interior!
