You have a good point about running test first, but I just went ahead and ordered a new one. But as far as starting the truck to fast are not allowing glow plugs two fully cycle, I can assure thats not the case. It's a 2000 I bought it in 2002 and I know the ins and outs of starting it. But I've never had a problem starting even at home a few times it was in the high 20's. But I'm not even close to being a diesel mechanic, so i really appreaciate all your help.
Thanks, Mel
Yeah,
It does sound strange for sure you are having so much trouble when the temp is not all that low. I never plug mine in until it drops into the 20s overnight and never had a problem either.
Sorry RV_TECH, I didn't give a good explanation in my origenal post. But your right, that could be a problem. But over the course of two weeks, I tried every possible starting method I could come up with. again I'm sorry if I sounded rude.
Thanks, Mel

No problem, never thought twice about it. Exchanging info by posts always leaves lots of questions.
Ok so as I said batteries are fine, Were home now in Ca. and it starts everyday here with no issiue. But Up north every day for two weeks It would not start without warming the block for about an hour. So I'll order the relay and install but how do I know if the problem is fixed? Do I have to wait until it gets down in the 30's and hope it will start? Can someone show me a picture of where the relay is on the truck?
Thanks
Mel
open the hood. look at the top of the engine between the fuel filter and the intake. there are two relays. the front one is the IAH, the rear is the glow plug relay.
with a test light, hook clip to ground. now probe the large terminals on the glow plug relay. one will be hot, one will not. one of the small terminals will be hot also with key on. next have a helper turn key to run position. probe the large terminals. both should now be hot. if one is not, the glow plug relay is not working.
when you put the new relay in, add a small light bulb or 12 volt LED somewhere inside the truck on the dash or where it can be seen from the driver seat. one side to ground, the other side to the large terminal going to the glow plugs. this will let you know when the glow plugs are getting power.
you will see that the light in the dash will go out after around 30 seconds, but the led can stay lit for up to 2 minutes.
after you verify your relays
If you have a DVM, search this forum for the valve cover harness wiring diagram, Do the resistance test for the Glow plugs. These can screw you up at temp under 50*
I bit the bullet and ordered up new batteries this week, not a great deal of choice here in the UK, optima yellow top or odyssey extreme, went with the odyssey's & wow! My truck has never started so well, it's always started straight away up until last week when, after being stood for 2 weeks, it hadn't got enough life in the batteries to spin it over for more than a couple of seconds. But now it spins the motor over like it has very little compression, probably 50% faster than before! Bring on winter!
IT'S FIXED! I followed your advice and changed the GPR I bought the WHITE RODGERS (Stancore) the stock one probably would have been fine but I spent the Extra $ and bought the bigger heavier one. So my truck has not been able to start without the engine block heater plugged in even though it's only around 40 degrees, so after reading your replies I changed the GPR last night. I went out a half hour ago, it was 39 degrees and as soon as the WTS light went off, I turned the key and it fired right up: Thanks again your advice cost me $60:- Much cheaper then taking to the shop, jammin WHAT A DEAL. Thanks everyone.
Mel
So as I said it's fixed, at least it started this morning without the block warmer for the first time since I started this for your advice. But after running a few errands today I noticed that now when the WTS light goes off the oil pressure guage drops all the way down at the exact same time. It rises right back up when the truck starts. I'm sure it never did this before the GPR was replaced last night.
Mel
at key on all gauges should sweep to full swing for a second or so, then fall all the way back and stay there until the engine starts.
with the exception of the volt gauge if you have one.
Tom,
So I just read your post, and ran outside to my truck. My truck turn key on all STOCK GUAGES go up even the temp guage if the motor is warm. None of them go down at all, except as of this A.M. the oil Pressure Guage dropped after WTS light went off. Just now Key on all guages rose except oil pressure guage Waited two minuites all guages still up but oil guage still has not rose started truck and oil pressure guage rose to normal and the rest stayed where they were while key was on and motor off.
