Coolant Refill Question

Alright. 1990 F150 with inline 6. I am planning to replace my coolant temperature sender that goes to my dash since it stopped working. And yes I know I should test it which I probably will when I go about changing my oil. Thing is when I replace it I might as well change my coolant since it's who knows how old in the engine. My question is. How do I go about filling the engine block? The radiator makes sense. Fill with 50/50 mix start the engine get the bubbles out etc. But how do I fill up a empty block?

It will fill on its own from the lower radiator hose. Just run it with the radiator cap off, topping it off as necessary.

The pump will push it through the block, pushing air out. Keep the cap off the radiator and let it run after filling. When the engine comes to temp, and the thermostat opens up, the level in the radiator will drop...fill it more. Keep it running, occasionally squeezing the top hose to burp it more. When it starts bubbling over, put the cap back on and pour some into the side tank to the HOT line. Shut it off, and let it cool. Check the levels again and add more if needed.

That's how I was taught by my uncle, and ASE mechanic, 20 some years ago.

I probably will have some left over for the side tank. I need 14 quarts and since I'm going to mix it myself I will have a quart of antifreeze and distilled water left. Well I should.

The capacity on my 460 is 5 gallons, so I just buy two gallons of distilled water, two gallons of concentrated coolant, and one gallon of premix coolant. Pour the four gallons of concentrate and water in, then top off with the premix after burping the air out.

This thread jinxed me. I burst a damn heater hose driving around today. Now I have to finally get around to flushing the coolant, and refilling it. Oh, and replace all my heater hoses.

I got to ask. Is this thread the first thing that came to mind when you found the burst heater hose?

No, but it wasn't an hour after I posted at 10:43 that it happened. The first thing that came to mind was why did i just get a splash of fluid on my windscreen, then why does it smell like coolant, then maybe the gauges I installed yesterday are malfunctioning.

After I got it fixed so I could drive again, and started thinking about filling it back up did I think of this thread.
