Hi
I should receive my new gas tank in 2 weeks and I have questions for pump and others.
My engine is a v8 239 1946 .
My gas tank will be mount near rear axle.
I will install an electric pump, a filter and a regulator.
I will install a return line from regulator to tank.
Pump will be close to tank. Mount in the ''c'' channel of frame
I will pass the fuel in the original pump without the pump shaft
The fuel will pass thru the original filter
My question is :
1-Were should I put my new filter? Close to new pump or to engine? (for me best is close to new pump in frame ''C'' channel)
2-Could I install the regulator close to new fuel pump or it need to be close to engine? (If I can install it near tank I would install a fuel pressure gauge near engine so I can adjust the pressure to exactly what I need really close to carb)
I would install it near the new pump. If you run fuel through the original pump there is a chance to rupture the diaphram and have fuel get into oil. It can happen with a regular pump but your going to have OE under pressure so be carefull.
Why run the fuel thru the old pump? It will heat the gas quite a bit. Regardless of that, a return line should come from as close to the carb as possible (and after the regulator). There are filters that have a small return connection for recirculating gas back to the tank, that could be installed just ahead of the carb.
I'd also put a filter ahead of the pump, I've lost two pumps to sand that jammed the rotors in the pump. That filter doesn't need to be real fine, you don't want to restrict flow on the inlet of a pump.
I Second the one before the pump. I have a glass filter before my mechanical pump and I'm always cleaning it. If you have a brand new tank maybe not needed but these trucks sit for a while every now and then.
I was passing fuel thru the original pump and filter just for the look...
I want to keep engine has original has possible.
The fuel rod passage has been plug in the rebuild but maybe I should installa block plate and cut activating arm so no fuel can go in engine.
The diaphragm is brand new.
If you could make a blocking plate to replace the diaphragm, that would eliminate that potential for gas in the crankcase, but you'd need a good drill press at a minimum. I would also pop out the check valves. Leaving the pump there would give you a pre-carb filter.
Nice looking engine! Did you go electronic on the distributor? I'd hate to get to those points.
Yes I went with pertronix.
So easy! No adjustment!
I just plug the kit and engine start on the first crank.
Really a nice product. (I still have to try it on road...)
But for now really good. (Starting engine every month for 15-20 min)
