I found a 1990 Bronko for sale for $980. It is at a Ford dealer. Haven't seen it yet. Don't know which engine it has. Will go tomorrow. Can anyone give me some idea of this trucks weak spots that I should check? I'd like to use it as a tow vehicle.
Thanks,
Rick
Welcome.ALL steering related components.Tranny and transfer case, find some dirt and make sure the 4x4 works. And RUST.
Wheel wells, tailgate, battery tray etc. $980 seems awfully cheap. Any chance of getting a warranty?
BTW. It's a BronCo.
Good Luck!
For $980 I wouldn't expect to get a great truck but if the engine, drivetrain, 4x4 all works, then its worth it to have a working fullsize 4x4 chassis. Even if the body is shot.
Make sure the body is straight, look underneath for marks made by hooks or bars that are used to straighten accident/salvage bodies.
Next look for water damage, like rust under the carpets, all carpets, and if the glove box shows any water marks. Close the doors whileinside and sniff, if you smell smoke or mold or something strange.
Next, check the body with a magnet. You are trying to find Bondo. The magnet will let loose in those areas.
Make sure the front and rear tires look in alignment after rolling forward several feet in a straight line. This is part of the body straight thing.
Everything mechanical can be repaired/replaced. But if the frame is scrap, the whole thing is scrap and not worth anything other then scrap metal.

ps.... I can dream can't I?
Maybe you'll read this before buying it, I don't know. Good advice from everyone, just want to add to check underneath for leaks, like the rear engine oil seal, tranny seals, axles. The salesman may tell you it's just a leaky valve cover gasket or something simple, but it costs $$$$ to replace these seals or add a quart of oil/fluid every day.
