6.6 Engine Parts
-Block needs to be decked and trued, also honed/bored
-bores are 30 over and need to be cleaned up to 40 over
- rockers are good
- cam is pitted and flatened,
- crank is 10 under and needs to be cleaned up another 10
- pistons have lots of scratches (replacing them anyway)
- rods need resizing and threads fixed (basically need to replace them too)
- heads mag fine but need at least a valve job, likely new seats
So essentially right now i need to:
- decide on pistons,
- rods
- cam (+lifters)
then i can get these items to my machinist and he can clean up the block to accommodate them.
Problem is, i am having alot of trouble finding any good info or variety of choices for pistons and rods. I talked to tmeyer briefly but i didn't feel like he was interested in explaining anything to me. I am interested in the 400 engine kit they sell but i was hoping to be able to 'shop around' a bit before making any decisions even though i will probably go with something from tmeyer in the end. I wonder if there is anywhere else to get these parts.
Anyone on here built one of these themselves and got any helpfull tips?
As far as parts go you could have Tim Meyer bush a set of his Molnar 400 rods for a 351C sized piston pin and it would open a world of options for pistons. The custom Keith Black pistons TMeyer sells are an excellent choice if you want to bump the compression up a bit.
Tim has a lot of BIG projects going right now, but he is also THE source for most dedicated 400 performance parts.
What is you budget and end use?
End use? I guess if i ever finish the entire truck i want to take my wife and the trailer that we dont have and dogs that we dont have camping across the country with the gas money we dont have.
The good news is, other than mileage, your "want" and "expect" aren't too far apart! Honestly 300HP is a given with a decent rebuild. Bump the compression up as you are planning and add a decent camshaft and 350 is pretty easily attainable. 400HP seems to be the domain of roller cams and yes, 5,000RPM - at least with iron heads.
Tim's oiling system modifications are worthwhile on any rebuild IMO. The bump in compression will allow you to choose from a wide selection of cams and Tim can certainly get you a suitable cam. ARP rod bolts are a must I think and an ARP oil pump drive shaft too, cheap insurance.
Good luck with you build - they are ALWAYS more than you think. LOL!
The only questions i have now are, which cam and timing chain should I choose? Ive looked up the cam cards but I am not positive on the correlation between those numbers and what i want. from what i can tell the extreme energy will give me the most bang for my buck without making my idle too sloppy like the thumpr, but i am really not sure. And as for timing chain i don't even know what difference any of it makes (ignoring gear drive). I plan on asking Tim if he can 'walk' my machinist through his oiling system mods but i don't fully understand that either.
