Running rich, failed smog

Took my truck to get smogged today and it failed. Seems to be running too rich at 15 miles per hour in first gear and at 25 miles per hour in 2nd gear. I did kept this nipple that I seen uncapped cuz my truck is running really rough and that actually smoothing it out like it normally would run. Can I get any help on this?

Take the aircleaner off and while it's running look down the carb throat. Do you see liquid gas dripping into the engine?

Would adjusting the pilot screw help in the 1800 range?

If you are talking about the mixture screw on the carb no, it only adjusts the mixture at idle. If you have a on purpose vacuum leak(cap off) somewhere, the mixture screw probably won't do much at idle either.

Photo #1 reveals a vacuum leak. Look at the rubber cap on the vacuum tree on the intake manifold [near the O2 Sensor]. Check all rubber and plastic vacuum lines for additional cracks. While at it, check the two bolts which secure the carburetor to the EGR adapter. They tend to vibrate loose and create another vacuum leak. These engines run poorly when a vacuum leak exists.

Your engine is computer controlled [based on the O2 Sensor]. Our forum moderator, Chris Tubutis, gave me this link which shows how to get the computer to tell you what might be wrong. http://www.therangerstation.com/tech...ry/OBD_I.shtml

He said in the first post that he intentionally left a vacuum port open to suck air to make it run better. I am wondering if he has float problems and uncontrolled fuel going into the engine.

Update. Just to pass smog. I loosened the carb mount bolts and Unplugged that cap I put on. It almost passed smog but the timing was too high now and I forgot to lower the idle speed so maybe that's why the timing was high. 1st pic is the first test.

You are letting it suck air everywhere to help the air to fuel ratio. You will never be able to idle it down by doing that. The carb is supposed to control the air entering the engine. It can't do that with all that air sucking in around the loose carb and the uncapped vacuum lines.

I know you are just trying to get it to pass, but I think you need to do some more troubleshooting.

Yeah, this situation sucks right now cause I broke both my hands and can't tear into this truck like I normally would. I need to be able to use the truck for doctors and what not. Maybe I will just have to take my time and do what I can do and do it right.
