Handbrake / Parking brake
I have 1978 F100.
The handbrake on it is like the type you have in a car.
Where it tightens with angular movement.
I don't know if a previous owner has done this.
I prefer the hand brakes that tighten with linear movement in a truck.
What type did they come with?
Thanks,
There's a small pedal to the left of the clutch/brake pedal assy. that you push down with your foot to actuate. There's also a small T handle just above the pedal that you pull to release the brake.
Econolines through '74, Some F350 and the B/F500's used a lever that you pulled. Some of these were dash mounted, some trans mounted.
Here's the typical parking brake in our trucks:
I have seen the foot pedal style that you speek of in internet articles and youtube videos. However I have never seen one in person. How do they go with hill starts, can you release them slowly?
I have attacjed photos. The first two photos show what is there. I don't know if this was the brake lever that came with the truck. Unfortunantly the truck was built in Australia. The third photo is to show what I mean by a linear lever and sounds more like the pull type you mentined. Which is what I am considering changing it to. As what is there provides little release control and is uncomfortable to use as it is too low.
Thanks,
Australian and US trucks have a lot of differences, most notable RH drive.
It looks like the parking brake is also different.
What you're showing looks similar to the brake release that was used on the early Econoline van over here.
As for the pedal style that we use over here, yes they can be released slowly. You push down on the pedal, pull the release handle and let up on the pedal. The brake will release as slow or as fast as you want.
Here's an illustration from the parts catalog showing the early Econoline brake system:
