2011 6.7L Dying

I am looking for answers to the problem with my 2011 F-350 DRW 6.7L dying. The truck has less than 113,000 miles on it and is is still covered under the ESP. It has died when pulling loads, not pulling loads, going uphill, on flat ground, heavy acceleration, light acceleration, after regen, and no where around regen. It is very inconvenient and presents a safety issue, especially when passing a vehicle on a two-lane road and there is oncoming traffic. I can slip the tranny into neutral and it starts right up. It shows no check engine light or registers a code. It has been to the dealership at least six times and is there again today as it died once Friday, twice on Saturday, and once again on Sunday. The dealership, after bringing it to their attention to a Service Bulletin, replaced the valves in the left head a couple of weeks ago, but the problem persists.
Has anyone else experienced this issue and if so, what is the fix. The dealership is going to change out the ignition switch tomorrow in a desperation attempt.

Moved to the 6.7L forum.

To clarify, the engine completely stalls out?

Perhaps it is time for the dealer to put in a data logger until the next time it does it, so they can see what is actually causing the issue, rather than throwing parts at it, and risking your safety.

Problem could be in the Battery junction box. Keep searching.

Yes, the engine dies as if you had turned the key to off. There is a hard hit like the transmission came disconnected, but the engine has died. The first time it happened, I actually thought I had blown the transmission.

I had a similar issue which turned out to be a bad connection at a fuse holder in the fuse box. The fuse that powers the PCM. Mine was caused by a fuse tap rammed into the fuse holder (self induced). I had to let a tech drive my truck as his personal vehicle for nearly a month until he figured it out. Mine was intermittent, didn't do it for the first 3 weeks he had it.

Same thing, died anywhere and eventually re started with no codes.

Anyway ... if there are NO codes it is likely they the PCM is losing power so I would start there. If it dies and the PCM is powered up you should get codes of some sort.

Good luck

Does it ever not re start on the first try?

When you turn the key to run (on attempt where it will not start), if you do not see the engine light and the glow plug light (if cold), the PCM is not powered up and it will not start when you turn to the key to start.

All the other lights and gauge sweep and stuff are controlled by the BCM and will look normal.

Take a look at this video where I am cycling mine and it is not starting. Look just above the hazard light button. When it does not start there is no glow plug light and no engine light. Then at around 1:06 you see the engine light and the glow plug light come on and it starts.

Sorry, I don't have any further ideas.

I would go with Doug's post #3

Good luck

I inquired about a data logger, but they did not anything available to loan out. Anyway, the dealership installed a new ignition switch. We'll see what happens.

Update on Dying Issue

As stated in my last post, the dealership installed a new ignition, but approximately 50 miles down the road the truck died again. So, the ignition switch wasn't the problem. I took the truck back to the same dealership and left it for over a week. They said they checked out wiring in the dash, but were unable to find any issues.
I picked up the truck this last week and took it to another dealership. one of the first tests they ran on the truck was a fuel system pressure test. They discovered that the system would not pass the test. It passed at 5000psi, but none of the higher pressures. They replaced the Volume Control Valve, which fixed the issue with passing the pressure tests.
So far the truck has not died since the fix, but it is still early. I need to drive it a few more days to determine if this is "The Fix".

Stupid question but has the PM22 cap cardboard disc in the fuel tank been ruled out?

Low fuel pressure warning on dash?

Well guys, it appears the last dealership's efforts and repair by replacing the volume control valve fixed the issue with my truck dying. I only wished the first dealership had performed the fuel system pressure check along time ago! I have driven my truck for over a week pulling various loads and speeds so I feel this has solved the issue.
I appreciate everyone's input. Maybe this will help someone else down the road.
Thanks again and have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
