Engine swap: 2005 6.8 V10

hypothetically what would an engine swap cost for a 2005 Excursion v10 6.8?
just plain ol' stock-for-stock.

I've done this job twice now. It's not real hard. It can be done in 24 hours if the tech has all the new parts on the bench. I don't remember the labor time but most shops probably would charge 35-40 hours I'm guessing.

Depending on labor rates and the cost of the other used motor, 2500 to 3500. Reman motor around 3300 with core charge.

If you're up to it, it can be done in your garage without lifting the cab. Just need a cherry picker

I did mine all by myself in about 2 days. I used a Harbor Freight gantry crane and block so I could lift the engine out with having to take the core support a part. That was when the Ex was at stock height. A cherry picker could be problematic.

It's doable as there's stand-alone ECUs readily available for such a swap. Not the cheapest swap, but yes, it would run.

run would need to include the transmission as well, your standalone controller will not also run the 4R100, so you would probably have to go ZF6, then you also would not be able to use the electronic 4x4, so you would need to get a manual transfer case as well.

Have fun with all that.

Meh, dump that 4R100 and use the superior 6 speed that's easily ran off of the same ecu that's available. That ecu is apparently fairly adaptable.

From what I understand, the ECU/PCM that comes with the 7.3 crate engine doesn’t have or accept a VIN, that is important if emissions testing happens in your area.

Im all for modernization to keep things going, but i don't think you realize just how much stuff won't work right with the 7.3 and the new ECM in there, all the gauges, the fuel pump sender, the tank level sensor, none of that is a direct crossover, going to have to sort it all out and likely rewire a lot of it, and no, the sender from a F250 or F250 will not just swap over, Excursions had a unique setup due to the massive fuel tank.

The emissions problems @WE3ZS brought up are a large stumbling block for most people as well.

Your 6 speed might adapt over but i doubt a transfer case will, and if your swapping the trans, NOW you also need to get a custom driveshaft made to adapt the trans to the differential, 2 shafts if you plan to even TRY to have 4x4 working eventually.
Then you need to have a transmission mount made to fit the Excursion, and hold the new transmission properly.

Have fun getting all of that sorted out, and if you even got it all working, you probably spent more than a new truck would have cost if you did the labor yourself, if your paying someone else to do the work, you spent even more.
