>POLLUTION is my biggest concern involving fossil fuels

BDV, I thought it was terrorism and big corporate oil companies taking over the world.

Just raggin' on ya a little. In all seriousness we need people like yourself to drive the changes that in the end will be better for us all.

Wow, it really took a long time to get registered...
I realize that biomass fuels are difficult to implement, because of the considerations with respect to the infrastructure of the supply and delivery chains. And yeah, they would be more expensive until the demand rose. But they are definitely worth producing, even if it were only for industrial use. I refer back to my comment about the co-ops making their own diesel; power farm equipment and municipal power plants with it. My goal isn't to eradicate petroleum as a fuel altogether, that would be foolish. It's by far the best power source for our technology. I want to see OUR DEPENDANCE UPON FOREIGN OIL DECLINE. If we could produce even a small percentage of our own fuel with bio mass technology, it would shift the power in the world away from entities like OPEC and the Arab world in such a way that diplomacy would be more attractive to the oil producing nations. That is a positive goal, to make the tyrant Arab nations HAVE to act with civility. Vast amounts of our dollars are going into the pockets of very few Arab oil giants, and that creates an imbalance. Basically they have us by the cahones because if they stop selling us oil, we would HAVE to go to war to maintain our economy. They know that, but most Americans don't.
As far as hydrogen powered vehicles, they have been built, and they worked great, had excellent mileage, and were powerful enough for a passenger vehicle. The problem was that the fuel cells were expensive because they had to be absolutely bullet-proof. Hydrogen is so easy to produce it's silly. Any organic material can be broken down by enzymes (I'll research and get the names of the enzymes if you want them) and the process of decomposition in these cases produces large amounts of hydrogen gas as a by-product.
Visit any landfill, and look around the perimeter of the property. There are dozens of pipes sticking out of the ground. These pipes are there to vent pockets of methane gas, which can grow large enough to combust under the conditions and pressures under tons of trash. These gases could be harvested, and if the landfills were set up properly, it could be a lucrative fuel source.
Gotta run
