I'm really wanting to add a light bar in the opening on my truck. It is a 2014 with the little grill already in place, the light bar is 18". My thought was to take the grill piece out to have a little more airflow there, but also to cut holes in the lower bumper which falls right inline with the CAC. What do you guys think about that, am I asking for trouble?
This pic is where I'm thinking of using a hole saw to create more airflow.
If you take a look at the 2015+ trucks, they don't have the offset license plate or a gaping hole in the front end for the CAC and yet we hear nothing about airflow issues. Same engine set up, different body style.
Does the 15 have a bigger CAC though. I was looking at a 15 that came through the shop today and noticed the plate. Couldn't get a good look at the CAC while it was here.....

I'm really not sure brother, I've never been under the hood of a newer one. The CAC may have been redesigned to prevent the issues of the past.
A single row bar shouldn't be an issue. I wouldn't cram a full width double row in there. The stock CAC already struggles to keep intake temps within 20* of the ambient temps, and I wouldn't want that to change personally.
What are you looking to accomplish with the lightbar?
Looking for more light for deer camp. Have to travel down a 2 track about a mile. Also for the main roads, lots of animals running around.
Also don't want to add a windshield bar, it would be too awkward on this truck, not lifted huge cuz I pull trailers often.
Also why I was thinking I could put some additional holes in the lower plastic like I circled to make up for the airflow loss the light bar will take up.
Gotcha
I'm not convinced the lower holes will add airflow. Might want to look at Duallys or D2s from Rigid in the fog buckets. I have SAE fogs from them and they are very bright but I do understand adding light for deer etc.
check out this single row 10" from Rigid. SR-Series 10" Midnight Edition Surface White Black... | Rigid Industries
It's 3750 lumens (about the brightness of OEM HIDs and twice and bright as a pair of Duallys) and its beam distance is 300 meters. Mounted low or high in the opening and it would likely blend right in.
That's the other side of it. I have an 18" light already (bday gift), I suppose I could always install it and see what happens to performance. Can always remove it and figure out what the 15's have for CAC after and in the mean time....
I was looking online at intercoolers and pipes. I will probably upgrade all of that next spring. Should eliminate anything at that point, maybe even a tuner and exhaust before I start dragging the boat around next season too.
