E4OD Transmission Mount or Insulator

This last week end I decided it was time to take the dive and replace the leaking oil pan gasket on the truck in my signature. Since I would be taking all the mounts/insulators loose I figured I would replace them while I was at it. Everything went well until I got the original transmission (rear engine insulator) out and compared it with the new Ford unit, and the studs going into the cross member didn't match up.

From what I have researched it looks like earlier E4OD's used a 59mm spacing and later units used a 69mm spacing. It would seem that the mount I need is no longer available from Ford... and I haven't found published specs on aftermarket units to determine if they are right. I know I can order parts and compare them when they come in and so forth, but I am not impressed with what I have read about the aftermarket mounts anyway. So, I was considering finding a cross member with the 69mm spacing or modifying the existing cross member to accept the 69mm mount.

Your thoughts and suggestions are welcome. Has anyone run into this before? What would you do?

Thanks!

NumberDummy,

What about the rear engine cross member with the 69mm spacing? I can see them in the online ford parts catalog (listed as obsolete/unavailable) but can't get a real part number other than the generic 6A023.

"Engine Rear Support Cross Member
5.8L; 4/W/D, E4OD A/T; 69.0mm between slotted holes for mounting trans. insulator - obsoleted r/b part with 59.0 mm between slotted holes"

F4TZ-6A023-L (replaced E9TZ-6A023-C & F2TZ-6A023-A) .. 351W/E4OD Rear Engine Support / Obsolete ~ Last MSRP: $166.85 - Dealer net cost: $100.11.

Also required on 1989/93 is F4TZ-6068-B (see post #2). But you have a 1994, so both these parts should be present.

Applications: 1989/97 F250/350 4WD / 1990/96 F150 2WD/4WD / 1990/96 Bronco // This puppy is also listed for 302/E4OD (applications if you wish).

METRO MOTORS in Christiansted USVI has 1 = 340-718-2121 x 114.

I cannot post pics because I'm using the 1990/2001 truck parts catalog on microfiche. Previous years (1928/1989), truck parts catalogs are available on C/D's from hipoparts.com

Thanks Number Dummy! I know microfiche is a pain to search and I appreciate the effort!

I have a E7TZ-6068-C insulator in hand, new from Ford, so if I can get my hands on the right cross member I should be okay.

I will let you know how it turns out. Thanks again!

Got a round file or a Dremel tool?? Just elongate the holes (make the slots a little bit longer) in your current cross member, it would just take 5mm on each hole!!! Why bust your wallet and waste time hunting something....

White 97 xlt,

It did occur to me, and it may still come to that. In this instance I'm hesitant to widen the holes as it would reduce the mating surface materials and provide more potential clearance for the insulator to move under load. I think these problems could be mitigated, but I don't mind hunting around for the time being.

Thanks for your input.

Number Dummy,

I followed up on the lead you offered on the cross member, but no luck. Interestingly, the gentleman said I was the second person to call looking for that part.

So, I reached out to Anchor Industries about the stud spacing on their listed replacement part, and indeed their part uses a 59mm spacing. Further, they had never heard of any other mount being used in that vintage F150 with a 351. I wonder if any OBS Ford F-150's do use the 69mm spacing or if it is an error in the catalog?

For the time being I have ordered an Anchor 2969 from Summit Racing and will run it. I also plan to hold onto the new Ford mount and if the Anchor part shows signs of failing I will see about finding a different cross member or modifying the one I have to accept the Ford part.

***EDIT***

I actually found the correct Ford mount on Ebay, NOS, and unless there are obvious flaws I will be using it. Don't know why I didn't look around Ebay earlier for the mount... oh well.

If anything new develops I will report back. I am trying to be thorough with this as there don't seem to be very many threads on the topic and it should be a common enough failure point to warrant some attention.

Thanks everyone!
