icp readings

im looking at buying a used 2004 f250 6.0. I went and looked at it everything checked out except I hooked up a computer to it and said it had low icp readings it was 18% at 580. what could be wrong with this? it ran started up good and everything could it possibly be a bad icp ?

If that's the reading at idle, that's a good number.

Roughly 580 is normal with oil at operating temp. Cold oil runs significantly higher.

Possibly low at operating speeds. Did you check the readings while driving it?

This truck will need some repair soon. If it's a good deal, maybe the price could be negotiated to account for that. The 2004 model year had many changes to the engine between early and late production but both versions had the problematic swashplate style High Pressure Oil Pump (HPOP). 2005 and later had a re-designed V-4 cast iorn unit that were much less prone to failure. A failing HPOP would be the most expensive repair, about $1k parts, close to that on labor. Less expensive possibilities are; it's a late production and the stand pipes and dummy plugs are leaking ($1k), the Injector Control Pressure Sensor (ICP) is bad ($300), The Injector Pressure Regulator (IPR) is bad ($500) or the screen is blocked(($250) or something simple like the electric plugs/harness is bad to the ICP or IPR ($150). the prices I'm guessing here are ball park and include labor in a good shop that finds the issue quickly without a bunch of diagnosis time or changing stuff that ain't broken.

I must be missing something here...........

580 ICP hot idle is spot on.
18% IPR is a bit lower percentage but in a good direction. Mine is 21% hot

Those look good

P2284 is for 326psi or lower than commanded. And without the STC fitting.... that could be a big leak or a bad sensor.
Rusty's got you covered. Find out why, you could have the deal of the century or as stated... a repair bill coming.
