My powerstroke been running funny so i took it to a local diesel repair shop and they think its the ecu thats making it act funny. i put a cali engine in a non cali truck, knowing this i got DP tuner to reflash it, The guys at the shop think it got messed up and that he change the hp of the computer since they say it feel like its got a 60hp chip in it, I been looking for a computer for couple days and had no luck finding a 1997 cali 4wd 5spd f series ecu, I know i can use an auto ecu but does 4wd make a differance with the computer and theres like 5 diff veriations of computers with different endings, Does anyone know how to decode these? Also would a 1996 ecu work?
You have to use a stick shift computer. I tried using an auto computer a couple of times and it ran really weird. I was killing it at nearly every take off with the clutch and having trouble with the idle real bad. That was with two different auto computers. So they are not interchangeable that way.
I think those mechanics don't know what they are talking about either.
How exactly is it running funny?
it just has a very rough idle, and i try to fix everything my self and i tried everything ipr o rings, new sensors everything i thought that could cause it and had no luck so i gave up and to it to a shop that only works on diesels, when i took it there when it was running he used like a infared temp gun and checked what temp each manifold was running and 3 were not to hot so he thought maybe it was something compression wise and was gonna do a compression test but then he got in to drive it and noticed its got lots of power he didnt think it was compression and was thinking the computer was messed up since he said it reved way to fast if its only suppose to be stock settings, so i guess if computer was reflashed wrong maybe that cause's the bad idle but it runs fine at anything over 900 rpm or so it seems to while going down the road,
That does sound like a computer problem but you need to check something first before replacing it.
Make sure that your HPOP is putting out enough at idle. I am dealing with this right now. My low pressure oil pressure is crap when it's warmed up and making it run rough at idle. As soon as I give it some gas it runs like a scalded dog. At idle the LPOP isn't supplying enough oil though to keep the HPOP fed. It's actually barely doing it for mine at higher rpms now. I was about to replace the low pressure pump.
You probably do need to replace the computer but check the pressure first. If you find the wire on the high pressure oil sensor that sends the signal to the computer then you can get a voltage reading at idle and convert it to a pressure reading. Or if your OBD2 DLC works you can just look at the pressure reading in the data stream. But ..... I will say, with chips and tunes like this I don't know if I would trust what the data stream says. They usually fudge the high pressure oil numbers somewhere with tunes like this. I'm not sure if the data stream would show the actual reading from the ICP or the fudged reading. I'm thinking the fudged one.
ok that sounds like a good idea where even is the lpop on these? i alwas wandered but never looked into it, are they hard to change? The shop its sitting at got a nice snap on data computer so ill ask them to check the pressures, I called every listing on car-part for a computer and everyone listed as being right was wrong, since i need a 97 cali 4x4 5spd computer, i guess its not to common, just my luck
I know oreilleys has the computers. You need the calibration number off your door sticker to choose the right one.
The LPOP is a simple one right behind the harmonic ballancer. If yours is giving you problems when it's hot but not cold ten that might just be your problem too. It's not very common though.
well i called napa advance pepboys and napa and autozone could find it in there computer but couldnt even order it, napa could cross referance the ford part number and gave me the napa part number and that had the calabration number on it which is 7-89n. and Pepboys says they can ccually get it in, I cant look on my door since i swapped engines and that wont help. Any body know if anybody on this site got a 97 cali 4x4 5spd that could check on there door sticker to make sure im ordering the right one?
I got a cali PCM for you if you want. it came outa my '96 since I put in my single shot sticks. If you wanna trade that might work out for both of us. It's for a manual zf5. send me a PM if that sounds good
Bill great info, i went to advance auto and ordered a computer there and with lots of research and cross referencing ford part numbers i ordered a computer with the 7-89n callibration, Thats the only code that came up on advance's computer so this should work correct?
