Do any of you guys know how to "re-key" the tumblers/lock?
I've had this part for awhile just now getting around to installing it.
The lock has a key that works, (as seen in pic) but...it's not a key that matches anything else on my truck. The ignition, doors are one key and I have another key for my locking glove box. I'd really like to be able to have the glove box key operate this hood lock.
I've called around to some local locksmiths, they've quoted me ridiculous prices to re-key this lock.
I'd like to think that this is something that a guy could do himself.
Obviously this "how to" info needs to be kept on the "down low".
I've googled for info on this topic, not much found for old Ford trucks.
I've messed around with the lock, tried a combo of the key and a paper clip inserted into the small hole..tried to insert my glove box key while working the paper clip...no luck so far.
I have rekeyed household locks which use color-coded tumblers of different heights and correspond to a key's tooth pattern.. short tumblers for the high spots and long tumblers for the lows. All tumblers are spring loaded.. tiny springs... Dunno what principles apply to that particular type of lock.
yeah, that's what I was thinking..the method of operation should be pretty straight forward.
If I could get the tumbler out I'd be home free. I thought that maybe it was the same as the ignition key/switch where the paper clip releases the tumbler...didn't work.
I figured out how to remove the tumbler. A stuck brass pin was holding up the removal.
Bad news, looks like I won't be able to use my glove box key on this tumbler.
The square key has a left hand "shelf" whereas the round key has a right hand "shelf".
I thought I read here awhile ago that the square key was for the doors/ignition, while the round key was for the glove box/hood latch lock.
Maybe this hood lock is from a later, 1980+ pick up/Bronco.
Can anyone confirm this?
I'm wondering if the body of the lock, even if it's from an '80's truck or Bronco, is the same as a 70's lock. Is it possible that the tumbler that NumberDummy mentioned is available from McDonald Obsolete Parts will fit in your lock body? At least then you'd be using the same shaped key. Maybe then you can re-key that new tumbler. I don't know; just an idea.
Pretty sure it is the same body but I can't check without taking a few apart. I also need to know as I have a bunch of these that need a re-key as well
Okay, so I now have a locking hood latch that works off of my existing ignition/door key.
I figured out how to re-key the tumbler. It's pretty easy once you know how.
The best part of this DIY experiment was that I saved $75-100 by not having to rely on a locksmith to do it for me. In my neck of the woods, locksmith services can get stupid expensive.
Luckily I had some spare locking hood latch tumblers I could pilfer for parts.
You'll need some of these to do the job....
