I had a truck that had a pin hole rust at the bend where it came out of the sender. I did away with the mechanical fuel pump and the filter that cluters the engine bay and used a Cat electric fuel pump with a 5psi poppet valve at the IP. constat 5psi fuel pressure and a constant flow returning to the tank bleeding air off

I'm still having rough idle but above 1k rpm she runs fine. I thought maybe glow plugs are bad but the problem doesn't get any better when the engine is at normal temp. Maybe leaking injector? She still doesn't start right away I have to keep cranking and bump the throttle once she fires up on a cold start. Any thoughts?

Buy a cheap 12v in line gas fuel pump, run a rubber from a diesel can to the fuel filter inlet. Start there. If it still runs rough, you know it's after filter, if it's cleared up check fsv fuel lines mechanical pump etc.

I asked before but didn't see a reply. You are running only one tank right? The fsv had been bypassed then right? Otherwise it can just pull air from the missing tank line. They don't seal perfect against air

Cylinder 5 has a bit of fuel on top of the injector by the metal fuel line. I did find a leak on the bolt I installed in place of the vacuum switch on the fuel filter housing. I'll get the correct bolt and use Teflon tape?

Uh the vacuum switch should be npt not any bolt thread I think? I use blue or yellow Teflon tape on diesel but white would probably last just fine. Or Oateys paste.

Leaking injector caps won't cause rough runnining once engine has run for say 30 seconds. Just hard starting and working air out if fuel line has drain back because of them

I'm running rear tank only. Front tank missing. Not sure if it was cut off properly. Previous owner did it. It was running fine for weeks until I messed with the fuel filter and didn't fill it up full of diesel. I put seafoam in it but didn't have enough to fill the filter. I bled the air and she ran good. Drove 50 miles. Died on freeway found fuel cut off switch disconnected. I reinstalled the plug and she fired up after I bled the fuel lines. Next day wife ran out of diesel so she thinks. I filled up tank 5 gallons and bled air from fuel lines again. She ran fine 50 more miles. Truck drove next day 70miled I stopped for fuel and started her up 15mins later no fire.I poored cold water on the fuel injection pump thinking it was stuck. I also sprayed ether on the air filter and after that the engine had a deeper tone while cranking. Got towed home. I couldn't bled the air out. I got her home. Removed the vacuum switch which seemed to be busted and I I stalled a bolt to seal the hole. She fired up after bleeding the fuel lines of air but then started to run rough while at idle

I wonder if your transfer pump is working. What happens with the engine running when you press in the schraeder valve? Fuel spraying out? Fuel and air? Only a dribble?

Put a different fuel filter on it!! You need to chase air with some clear tubing.

I replaced the fuel filter and filled it with seafoam. I'm going to purchase clear tubing in the future. I'm just trying to figure out why it's running rough now. FYI the seafoam is long gone thru the system. Been running on straight diesel for some miles now. It ran fine with the seafoam. I just purchased the correct fitting to replace the vacuum switch I'll install it when I get home and post a update

Ok so I installed the new plug where the vacuum switch was. She fired after cranking for about 10 seconds I bumped the trotted and she calmed down. Let her warm up. Still rough idle. Also this time light whitish smoke from exhaust. Very light. Maybe slight blueish hard to tell. I'm trying to post a video on YouTube of the idle issue. Like I said. She ran fine with the seafoam in the fuel filter and I got fresh diesel in there and drove for miles. The last break down (air in fuel system) I poured water on the injection pump. Could I have gotten water in somewhere? The oil is as black as my shoes and coolant is topped off. No milky Ness in the oil that I see. She runs better under throttle. I'm clueless guys. Maybe it's all in my head. It's just jumpy when idling. Seems to me like it's not firing on all cylinders at idle. Could a clogged fuel injector be the issue? But wouldn't it still continue to run rough at higher rpm? Any ideas would be helpful. Maybe that's how a old diesel is. Haha its just not as smooth running as it was 2 weeks ago. I'm worried that the ether fluid did something like I said the engine had a deeper tone while cranking after I sprayed a slight mist trying to get her to fire up when I broke down
