Alternator ?
So I replaced one of the batteries & the alternator and the truck worked well all week until this afternoon. The guys were on their way back to the shop & the battery light started flashing. Is the 110 Amp alternator not enough (that's what was in the truck to begin with) or is the battery I didn't replace shot or both? What alternator do you recommend for an '06 F450 landscape dump w/ 6.0L diesel single alternator set-up? I'll order on-line as soon as I hear from y'all I guess...
It's not. I have two dead 110A and a dead 140A to back that up.

I bought this alternator:

This is a good upgrade over stock if you don't want to go big:

This is the Leece Neville unit everyone loves lately, but make sure you order the pulley with it because it's a minor PITA to install (you need a pass through socket):

If you do the underdrive pulley there's a slight chance you need a new belt tensioner depending on how slack yours is with the smaller pulley.
Honestly, THIS IS THE ALTERNATOR that you actually need.
Advance Auto sells a 140A unit, you can use the code TRT30 to save 30% on it if you buy online and ship it to your local store. I don't think 140A is enough though, I have a dead one on the shelf to support this opinion. Plus make sure you check all the cables, and add the ground cables I linked to in post #12. I did the complete cable set from FICMrepair, but there is an argument to if it's necessary or not even with a larger alternator.... the extra ground cables are pretty well unarguable based on the hard data Jack provided.

Oh yeah, now I remember...

Another vote for the Leece-Neville 230Amp alternator.

The OEM alts are reported to produce approximately 50% of what they are rated at. This means your new 110a alt is producing a max of around 55-60 amps. This is not near enough for a diesel super duty - especially one with a dump bed.

With it you will need to increase the alternator to battery cable with a 2ga wire and fuse, and with the dump body I would install improved cables on the battery cross and driver's side negative side, adding a cable between the frame and motor. That cable is even recommended in Ford's Body Builders Guide. That all that necessary as other cables are not necessary.
I use a dump trailer on the farm with quick cycling and we had an F-550 dump at the test facility, I know your situation well.
