My 94 Explorer (4.0L EFI, V-6, manual transmission) has been giving me intermitent trouble starting. Starter and battery seem fine. The engine will fire weakly a couple of times, then it won't start no matter how much cranking. If I let it sit long enough (up to 1 hr) it will start and run normally. And, it never happens when the truck has been sitting overnight, it happens only after the truck has been driven. My local mechanic can't find the problem. I'm hoping someone can give me some clue to the solution. Thanks in advance, John
My 94 Explorer had simular problems especially when it was hot. It would intermittently turn over but not fire up after parking and running into a store. Then it started ti die when idling at a red light and not restart. The engine would turn over but no fuel. The diagnostic code were of on help. The Ford service mechanic remembered that some fuel relays were having problems with the heat causing intermitten starting problems. It was a cheap repair replacing the fuel relay. The problem has not come back.
Checking the fuel relay is a good idea. In instances of when it won't start, when you first turn the key to the 'on' position, listen to see if you hear the fuel pump run. If it doesn't run for a second or two, then it could be the relay or the pump.
I had the same problem, which was originally attributed to a faulty sending unit on the fuel pump. Replaced fuel pump. A couple of months later, problem resurfaced. After searching through the forums here, I decided to replace Fuel Pump Relay. Problem disappeared for a few weeks, then resurfaced again. After scouring the forums one last time, decided to replace EEC relay, problem solved and has not returned in 4 months.
