I tow a 24FB Springdale TT with a 02 Ford Explorer w/V8 engine and is a 4x4 with the auto/high/low selecor switch. When towing the TT or my Four Winns boat I turn off the overdrive and leave the selector in the auto position. The Explorer is constantly trying to apply traction to the front drive train. This results in the tranny and drive train sounding and feeling like it is going to come apart. Should I select the 4x4 high position, which I am sure will stop this, but is there something else I should be doing and is there any adverse effects from doing this? Anyone else have this experience or advise?
Defiantly don't tow with the 4x4 in high!!
The Auto setting is the only setting you should drive on road with except in bad road conditions. My '99 used to do the same thing your's is doing as far as the Auto engaging, but only on steep hills. It was kind of weird at first, but I got used to it and other than the weird feel of it happening I never had any ill effects. On the '95-'01 models you can actually disable the Auto setting so that you have true 2wd, but on the '02 ups I don't think it can be done.
